Job Summary

The Director of Healthcare Informatics and Analytics is responsible for creating and maintaining an appropriate informatics environment to support and improve clinical, business, and research outcomes within Houston Methodist.  In addition, he/she will be responsible for the direction and oversight of analytics and reporting to support financial, clinical, and research goals, product development, and business strategy.  This position will design and manage an integrated data and technical architecture strategy to support the Enterprise Data Warehouse.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

PEOPLE (25%)

  1. Develops policy and action plans for department that ensure talent development (recruitment, retention, and staff learning and development, satisfaction and well-being) in alignment with system goals within Information Technology (IT) as well as other system-wide talent development initiatives 
  2. Fosters a culture of valuing staff by: 1) demonstrating commitment to staff success; 2) providing recognition beyond regular pay; 3) offering development and progression; 4) sharing the department’s knowledge to better serve customers and meet strategic objectives; and 5) creating a supportive environment for a diverse workforce.  Ensures managers and leads under direct control demonstrate the same level of valuing staff.
  3. Retention rates and employee opinion survey results meet or move toward People Excellence.
  4. Develops and maintains appropriate query tools to support clinical and research informatics. 
  5. Develops and maintains strong partnerships with customers to understand their processes and needs, translating those into functional specifications for BA reports, integration, and applications to realize business objectives.
  6. Partners with Data Architects in operational areas and systems to share/create best practices for enterprise data management.

 

FINANCE (20%)

  1. Manages the Enterprise Data Warehouse and analytical environments for system initiatives, providing timely variance reports to the Information Technology Vice President of Corporate Systems.
  2. Ensures appropriate staffing models are developed, maintained, and modified to ensure efficient use of resources.
  3. Develops and manages the annual operating expense and capital budgets for assigned departments.

 

QUALITY/SAFETY (25%)

  1. Develops a healthcare informatics vision consistent with Houston Methodist’s mission and gains the commitment of colleagues and stakeholders to align around this vision to achieve short and long term goals.
  2. Maintains strong controls related to data quality and integrity.
  3. Develops a fundamental understanding of multiple business functions related to operational production systems, and the EDW structures needed to drive the analytical strategy.
  4. Collaborates with business/process owners and end users of informatics/analytics to help determine needs for system maturation.
  5. Contributes expertise to technology planning, selection, and upgrade discussions and decisions as they relate to data and data management.
  6. Accountable for consistency across the system as changes in process, tools, and overall practices are developed, ensuring a focus on continued system integration and overall system benefit.
  7. Responsible for the implementation of security, performance monitoring, change management, and update/upgrades of the Enterprise Data Warehouse and analytical environments.

  9. Provides project management and oversight for departmental and system-wide projects requiring analysis, feasibility studies, implementation, maintenance, process/procedure development and planning.
  10. Collaborates with management of customer groups to identify opportunities to use or enhance technology capabilities for improved productivity and/or effectiveness.
  11. Draws on understanding of corporate business objectives, available technology functionality and departmental resource capacity to provide vision for the operational activities of assigned IT teams.
  12. Reviews team projects on a routine basis, seeks information about completion obstacles and redirects staff focus and/or manages customer expectations as needed. 
  13. Ensures that the IT Program Management Office (PMO) endorsed project management methodology is adhered to in all projects.  Ensures tactical plans developed are consistent with strategic IT objectives.
  14. Manages vendor and consultant relationships to ensure conformance to contracts for applications and technology utilized within the assigned area of responsibility.

 

SERVICE (20%)

  1. Accountable for translating The Methodist Experience service standards into specific expectations for all direct reports and staff in alignment with the Information Technology division to anticipate and meet customer needs. 
  2. Communicates patient satisfaction scores (highlighting those impacted by the division/departments) to all department members, and establishes policy and programs to drive improvements in scores to meet (or move toward) system goals. 
  3. Ensures that appropriate systems are in place to provide safe, efficient, and customer-oriented service to all internal and external customers. 

 

GROWTH/INNOVATION (10%)

  1. Drives and promotes innovation. Challenges the status quo and expects holistic approach to customer’s current and future needs, strategic business direction, and industry needs.

  8. Defines (and/or improves) data capture requirements for measuring and reporting efficiency improvements, consistent application of standards and management performance against targeted goals.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Mathematics, Statistics or Finance required; Master’s Degree preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Ten years of experience in data, informatics or biostatistics, and experience working with large health care data sets.  Ability to interpret data and its relevance on a wide range of health topics is essential.
  • Five years of progressively responsible Director level experience is highly desirable, preferably to include informatics and quality/cost improvement.
  • Effective at developing strategies for growth and developing positive customer relationships.  Highly collaborative, cross-functional and systematic.
  • Five years of successful experience in managing a large scale Enterprise Data Warehouse in a healthcare environment.
  • Experience with electronic health records, health information systems and health care applications.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Products: Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Project. 
  • Must be able to sustain effective working relationships with senior management, physicians, all levels of employees, third party vendors, government and regulatory compliance agencies and other partners and affiliates.
