Job Summary

Float Option B - PRN - Days



The hospital based float RCP is an RCP III with a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) license who has completed the minimum education requirements (Associate Degree) and successfully completed both the entry level and clinical simulation exams offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care and has obtained and maintains a license to practice from the Texas Department of Health. Provides all aspects of Respiratory Care to patients in assigned areas according to the hospital and department guidelines, policies and procedures.  This is a PRN position.



Depending on department specific competencies may serve all Patient Age Groups including Neonate, Infant, Toddler, Pre School, School Age, Adolescence, Young Adult, Middle Adult, and Mature Adult.




  1. Exercises independent judgment and critical thinking skills to perform routine Respiratory Care in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures including: (EF)
    1. Administer and monitor treatment modalities
    2. Prepare, administer and monitor medication delivery
    3. Administer and monitor gas therapy
    4. Assess each patient’s cardiopulmonary status
  2. Accurately documents all patient care and respiratory related activities in the Respiratory Care Information System and adheres to other hospital required documentation requirements. (EF)
  3. Exercises independent judgment and critical thinking skills to perform Advanced Respiratory Care procedures in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures including: (EF)
    1. Implements, monitors and evaluates ventilatory support
    2. Evaluates patients and recommends therapeutic interventions
    3. Completes specific training on new procedures with documented proficiency


  1. Advances clinical knowledge as demonstrated by participation in optional education opportunities, attendance at all required inservices and remaining current on recent medical publications
  2. Maintains Professionalism as demonstrated by :
    1. Adherence to the Time and Attendance Policy
    2. Adherence to the institutional dress code
    3. Maintenance of current licensure and/or CPR requirements
    4. Active Membership in Professional Organizations related to Respiratory Care
  3. Demonstrates the components of the I CARE values statement
  4. Follows all safety rules and policies and attends all required training in a timely manner. Reports accidents promptly and actively correct minor safety hazards.
  5.  Performs all other duties as assigned.    



Graduate of an AMA approved Respiratory Care Associate Degree program or its equivalent.  Bachelors Degree in Respiratory Care preferred.



Recent Graduation from Respiratory School accepted. 5 years ICU level experience preferred. 2 years experience credited for Bachelors degree



Registration (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care.


Current Certification from the Texas Department of Health as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).


Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)




Basic computer skills required. Must be knowledgeable in the current practices of Respiratory Care including protocol management. Must have a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally with other members of the health care team. Must have the ability to build and sustain interpersonal relationships.

Normal office environment, as well as Acute and Critical Care patient areas.


Exposure to blood and body fluids. Must follow Infection control procedure including Universal Blood and Body Fluid Precautions. Hepatitis B Vaccine offered.


Normal shift work of 8 and 12 hours. Department approved Blue Scrubs must be worn.
