Job Summary

The department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at the Houston Methodist Hospital seeks a Quality Assurance Specialist for the HLA Laboratory.  The HLA Laboratory provides typing, antibody testing and engraftment monitoring to solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant programs, and supports non-transplant clients.  Houston Methodist is seeking an experienced clinical laboratory specialist to augment the laboratory quality program.

Duties and Responsibilities are cross-referenced to the hospital's Pillars of Excellence and will be transferred to the Performance Evaluation. The Project Specialist provides analytical and specialized technical support to department management. Responsible for specific moderately complex, project-oriented assignments which include leading, coordinating and completing projects related to operational activities. The Project Specialist works under the guidance of more senior staff.

  • Develops, maintains, and monitors a quality management system for the HLA Laboratory of the Department of Pathology/Genomic Medicine. 
  • Documents all significant activities and directs process improvement activities as necessary. 
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, local regulatory and accrediting agencies (e.g. UNOS, ASHI, CAP, DNV, AABB, FACT, and FDA). 
  • Maintains compliance with all hospital regulations, policies and procedures. 
  • Collects and reviews quality metrics to ensure operational standardization and regulatory compliance. 
  • Analyzes data and prepares reports. Reviews and evaluates compliance gaps and implements process improvements. 
  • Manages external and internal proficiency testing programs and acts as a Quality and Compliance Educator and Consultant to operational staff. 
  • Maintains and manages internal Critical Incident Program.

Baccalaureate degree in a related field and either successful completion of an accredited Medical Technology program/Clinical Laboratory Sciences program, or completion of a combination of education and experience as defined by American Society of Clinical Pathology as alternate routes for eligibility for the MLS (ASCP) exam.


  • Must be certified as a Medical Technologist – MT (or categorical certification) by the Board of Registry (ASCP),
  • OR as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist – CLS (or categorical certification) by NCA,
  • OR have a discipline specific certification, OR certified by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI).
  • Optional Certificates: Quality Auditor Certification (CQA) by the American Society for Quality (ASQ), Certified Histocompatibility Specialist, CHS (ABHI).   


  • Three (3) years of experience in related discipline to include 1 year of experience of project management experience required.
  • MBA or MHA accepted in lieu of experience.
  • Preferred experience: 5 years of clinical experience with at least 2 years in quality assurance process improvement, or in a Manager/Supervisory role or equivalent in a large hospital or reference laboratory setting.


  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in spreadsheet, word-processing, and presentation software.
  • Professional handling of exposure to confidential/sensitive information.
