Job Summary

SUMMARY      Provide anatomic pathology services under the direction and supervision of a pathologist. Contribute to the overall efficiency of the laboratory and pathology practice in a cost-effective manner by performing a variety of tasks, consisting primarily of gross examination of surgical pathology specimens and instructing pathology residents and pathology assistant students in gross surgical pathology.     

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES      1. Gross dissection of large and small surgical specimens, using standard dissection protocols, identifying and submitting pathologic tissues for histological processing and evaluation. Dictates accurate and precise gross descriptions for each specimen. 2. Assist with dissection and tissue sampling of specimens sent for intra-operative consultation. 3. Instruct pathology residents, fellows and pathology assistant students in surgical and autopsy pathology. 4. Photographs specimens for documentation and for use in presentations and publications. Maintains digital photography database. 5. Reviews all frozen section reports on a monthly basis for quality assurance, with final review and assessment by pathologists. 6. Collects cases for quality assurance retrospective review. 7. Performs other duties as assigned. 8. Maintains current certification and remain current in practice through continuing medical education. 9. Demonstrates the componets of the ICARE values statement.      

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS       Route 1: Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant program providing academic and practical training leading to either a master's degree or a bachelor's degree. The employee must be eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Certification exam. Or Route 2: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university in the field of health science, AND full time acceptable on the job training experience as a Pathologists' Assistant under the supervision of a pathologist certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology. The employee must be eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Certification exam.      

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS      Program trained Pathologists` Assistant  Minimum of 1  year of clinical experience On-the-job trained Pathologists` Assistant  Minimum of 3  years of clinical experience     

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED     American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Pathologists` Assistant Certification, PA (ASCP)     

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED     1.  Experience with computer systems is required.
