Houston Methodist Research Institute was formed in 2004 to rapidly and efficiently translate discoveries made in the laboratory and the clinic into new diagnostics, therapies and treatments. The research institute was created to provide the infrastructure and support for these endeavors, and to house the technology and resources needed to make innovative breakthroughs in important areas of human disease. A 540,000 square foot building dedicated to research, the research institute houses over 1,500 staff and trainees, 277 principal investigators and has more than 840 ongoing clinical trials.
Two postdoctoral positions are available in the Yun laboratory at the Houston Methodist Research Institute. Houston Methodist is an academic medical center that is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medical College and the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University. Houston Methodist Research Institute was formed in 2004 to rapidly and efficiently translate discoveries made in the laboratory and the clinic into new diagnostics, therapies and treatments. The research institute provides the infrastructure and support for translational research in a highly dynamic environment. It houses the technology and resources needed to make innovative breakthroughs in important areas of human health, including cancer, nanomedicine, regenerative medicine, neurosciences, Immunotherapy, and cardiovascular medicine.
Dr. Kyuson Yun 's laboratory studies brain cancer stem cells using genetically engineered mouse models, patient derived xenografts (PDX), and fresh patient samples. The long-term goal of the lab is to develop new cancer therapies and diagnostic tools, through fundamental discoveries and technology development. Our ongoing projects include: 1) elucidating molecular mechanisms of therapy resistance in brain cancer stem cells, 2) development of a new small molecule inhibitor to target cancer stem cells, 3) validation of a new experimental platform for drug screening, 4) generation of new mouse models of GBMs and medulloblastomas.
Postdoctoral fellows are expected to:
Perform basic and translational research under the supervision/direction of Dr. Yun
Execute funded projects with minimal supervision
Perform various experiments in cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology
Maintain his/her research mouse colony
Perform surgical manipulations and drug dosing in mice
Maintain meticulous and detailed notes and regularly update databases
Prepare manuscripts (figures and drafts)
Supervise junior members of the laboratory
Candidates with strong background in cancer, stem cell biology, brain tumor modeling, and/or pharmacology, demonstrated by published track record, are strongly encouraged to apply. We seek team members who share our passion for research and sense of curiosity and urgency. Strong understanding of mammalian genetics and cell biology is highly desired and extensive experience in routine molecular biology and biochemistry techniques are required. Successful candidates must have outstanding communication and organizational skills, enjoy working independently while helping others, and thrive in a fast-paced team environment.
