The Pharmacy Technician II assists in providing day-to-day comprehensive pharmacy services that require advanced competencies (i.e., order entry, compounding, etc.). The Pharmacy Technician II assists the Pharmacy manager in the collation of data for productivity and quality assessment, improvements, and mentoring new employees. The Pharmacy Technician II may, at times, be required to perform other specialized functions in the work area, if trained and competent in the function. The Pharmacy Technician II may also, at times, be required to perform any functions normally associated with a Pharmacy Tech I job description if departmental needs mandate. The Pharmacy Technician II is responsible for fulfilling the department`s mission to provide excellent distributive, educational, and clinical services to our customers. The Pharmacy Technician II is required to respect fellow team members and other healthcare workers. The Pharmacy Technician II is expected to provide compassionate customer service and is absolutely accountable for their work performance. We commit ourselves to positive patient and family outcomes. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inventory Order Processing: Reviews all requisitions for inventory issues and transfers, and classifies and records the information correctly and timely in the inventory system. Ensures that all requisitions are appropriately handled, including backorders. Generates reports of transactions recorded.
- Discrepancy Monitoring: Communicates with receiver, purchaser or staff to resolve discrepancies for quantity, price, purchase order, etc. Ensures appropriate documentation is in place to allow for resolution and monitors all credits pending.
- Maintains Filing: Maintains timely and accurate filing for all pharmacy vendor activity: invoices, purchase requisitions, purchase orders, and credits. Maintains files for all inventory and department transactions and reports.
- Invoice Resolution: Prepares all invoices for timely payment processing to accounts payable by ensuring appropriate accumulation of all documentation of purchase orders, packing slips, invoices and receiving reports.
- Department Issues & Floor stock: Maintains inventory records for all department issues and floor stock activity. Ensures all issues are authorized and appropriate and that necessary documentation is maintain. Records, summarizes and submits monthly summation of department issues and floor stock charges to Financial Accounting.
- Inventory Adjustments: Generates cycle count and inventory adjustments as necessary. Reviews for appropriate resolution efforts before posting the adjustments. Brings unusual or questionable adjustments or observed violations of storeroom activities immediately to the supervisors attention for action or follow-up as needed.
- Other Accounting Activities: Performs other accounting activities and other assigned duties.
- Assigned tasks are completed in a timely manner, orders are filled and ready on time for the next delivery, completes productivity and other data by the assigned due date. Minimizes idle time and helps others complete the workload.
- Proactively trains new employees, students, and residents. Helps train and monitor progress of new employees, students and residents. Completes training and inservices documentation for new employees promptly and correctly. Provides progress reports to manager when needed.
- Assists in ensuring the department procedures and policies are followed by notifying management of any identified discrepancies. Follows up on any non-routine transactions. Assists in stock dating and removes and returns outdated drugs using the correct forms and procedures. Follows through on non-processed invoices. Notifies the purchaser when overstock is identified. Accounts for all credited stock accurately and promptly. Uses computer system to record transactions accurately and timely. Records cycle counts accurately.
- Maintains Board of Pharmacy requirements for certification, as required. Participates in continuing education activities for technical staff.
- Monitors inventory levels appropriately in the work area and automated dispensing units. Checks stock dating and removes and returns outdated drugs using the correct forms and procedures, including automated dispensing units. Identifies drug needs for re-ordering and orders appropriately. Rotates and accurately restocks. Follows through on back orders. Does not overstock the area. Performs refractometer testing, as required. Monitors the automatic dispensing unit reports. Physically places credited stock back into inventory accurately and promptly. Uses bar code reader to document expiring drug stock and wastage. Uses on-line ordering system. Recycles IVs to minimize waste. Completes requisitions properly. Performs and records cycle counts accurately.

- Must be a high school graduate or have high school equivalency.
- At least two years of college preferred but not required.
- Must test satisfactorily test out or complete a 3 month training program which includes classroom and practical experience to learn the technical skills needed to prepare medication accurately and correctly within the 90-day probationary period.
- Must have completed a 40-hour course in IV admixture training provided by an ACPE provider, or obtain 40-hours of IV training in a structured on-the-job training program at The Methodist Hospital. Must complete a process validation test during the training period, annually, and whenever the Department`s quality assurance/improvement program yields an unacceptable result or unacceptable techniques are observed.
- Must have at least 2 years of hospital pharmacy technician experience outside of The Methodist Hospital or 1-year hospital pharmacy experience at The Methodist Hospital with above average performance and must possess a basic understanding of inventory management principles.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- Must be certified as a pharmacy technician as required by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
- Must maintain certification as required by law.
