SUMMARY: Accurately processes, organizes, labels and transports specimens for laboratory testing. Inputs and extracts data from the laboratory computer system. Performs clerical tasks such as answering the phones and faxing lab reports.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Demonstrates knowledge and competency using the laboratory information system to accurately register patients, in lab specimens, or order tests as indicated on the requisition. Data must be thorough and accurately entered to include appropriate footnotes, comments, order priorities, physician names, patient location and collection information. Demonstrates competency in choosing the correct patient account to use for ordering tests. Distinguishes institutional accounts from regular patient accounts. 2. Processes specimens and/or slides/blocks according to procedure for samples tested in the laboratory as well as samples forwarded to referral laboratories. Stat samples are handled expeditiously. Demonstrates a working knowledge of specimen requirements for testing such as serum, plasma or whole blood, tissue and body fluids. Labels all aliquots and/or slides/blocks carefully and stores processed specimens at proper temperature. 3. Maintains thorough and complete documentation of work performed. Files requisitions, reports and other pathology materials appropriately. Answers the telephone and handles requests to fax results to physician offices. Keeps work area clean and stocked with supplies. 4. Prepares specimens for courier pick up and delivery to main TMH. Communicates with other laboratory personnel when specimens need to be transported to other areas. 5. Communicates clearly and professionally with patients, nurses, physicians, visitors, and coworkers in a courteous, friendly, and helpful manner. All phone conversation is professional. Recognizes problem occurrences, identifies causes, and takes corrective action to solve basic problems. Consults a medical technologist if no preset criteria are available. 7. Readily implements and is receptive to new and revised procedures. 8. Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards. Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace. 9. Competent to perform phlebotomy as appropriate on assigned work shift. 10. Demonstrates high standards in providing customer service and patient satisfaction. 11. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Previous data entry and specimen handling experience required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: American Heart Association (AHA) CPR required. AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is preferred.
WORKING : Includes office, patient care units, and invasive procedure areas. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens, sharp instrumentation, and humidity. Significant potential exposure to latex Must be able to read instruction and warning labels on hazardous chemicals.
