Job Summary

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES      Peri-Operative Period The Transplant Recovery Specialist exhibits knowledge and ability to facilitate recovery, preservation and packaging of organ(s) for transplantation. This includes defining and adhering to the current OPTN/UNOS regulations and allocation policies. The Specialist: 1. Participates in the organ recovery process according to transplant center protocol. (Service)  2. Communicates with recovery team regarding pending surgical procedure. Arranges transportation of teams/organ to/from donor hospital and transplant center. Coordinates timing of transplant event by frequent communication with OPO, recovery and transplant teams. (Service)  3. Review and obtain hard copies of essential documents in donor operating room, prior to organ recovery (surgical time-out) along with recovering surgeon including: (Quality/Safety)  a.  Signed consent form for organ donation and recovery of organs b. Pronouncement of death note (signed by pronouncing physician with date/time of pronouncement) c. Donor ABO type (blood bank/lab hard copy result) d. Donor serological testing results (lab hard copy of results) e. Other results as needed: HLA results, Echocardiography hard disk, Biopsy slides 4. Ensures organs and tissue will be recovered to maximize utilization in accordance with OPTN/UNOS policies. Preserves organs and tissue according to OPO and national standards to ensure maximum viability for transplantation. (Quality and Safety)  5. Assures availability of proper instruments, equipment, and supplies during the surgical recovery. Requests the need for sterilization of specialized organ and tissue recovery instruments as required. (Service, Quality/Safety)  6. Assists in surgical recovery procedures as required by specific situation and recovery protocols. (Service)  7. Implements appropriate organ and tissue-specific preservation procedures. Prepares, hangs, monitors, and records type, characteristic and volume of preservation solution(s). (Service, Quality/Safety)  8. Assures adequate tissue typing material is recovered for each organ and tissue and archiving. Assures inclusion of vascular grafts as required with packaged extra renal organs and tissue. (Service)  9. Assures proper packaging and labeling of organs and tissue typing materials according to OPTN/UNOS and OSHA standards. (Quality/Safety)  10. Exhibits ability to remove transplant recipient from list per OPTN/UNOS regulations. (Quality/Safety)  Communication & Documentation 1. Communicates in an active, positive, and effective manner to all health care team members. (People)  2. Assures proper documentation of extra-renal organ and tissue anatomy and abnormal findings. Assures proper documentation of kidney anatomy, measurements, and abnormal findings. (Quality/Safety)  3. Completes all recovery documentation requirements to include, but not limited to logistics documentation, Procurement Verification Form and organ Custody Verification Forms, and TMH Recovery Team Transplant Reporting Record. (Quality/Safety)  4. Assures confidentiality of donor records. Complies with OPO, OPTN/UNOS, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) policies and procedures regarding documentation and maintenanceof records. (Quality/Safety)  5. Maintains and submits accurate data for hospital-based statistics and regulatory agencies such as UNOS/UNET, CMS, and Medicaid in order to ensure proper department financial management, compliance with all governmental reporting requirements, and proper quality outcomes monitoring. These data requirements include, but are not limited to: units of service, recovery logistics tracking, recovery supply management, and UNOS TIEDI forms.    EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS      Undergraduate degree in allied health or related field, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Bachelor of Administration (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS). Organ Recovery Experience with Surgical First Assistant Certification in lieu of degree.       

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS      Minimum 2 years technical work experience in Organ Recovery for an OPO/Transplant center OR Minimum of 5  years operating room experience as a surgical technician.      

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED     cardiopulonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification Surgical First Assistant Certification Procurement Specialty Certification Preferred and Required within 2 years of employment.      SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED     1. Skilled at managing complex caseload and ability to prioritize/triage responsibilities. 2. Extremely well-organized and detail oriented, self-directed. 3. Excellent interpersonal skills required to deal with diverse patient population.4. Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
