Job Summary

The Patient Care Assistant Extern is an 8-week position, which incumbents should demonstrates basic knowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriately and carry out delegated tasks for age specific populations.  He/She performs delegated patient care tasks under the supervision of a licensed nurse.  He/she records data established by policy and procedure, and reports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse.  The Patient Care Assistant Extern is responsible for assigned non-nursing functions.  The Patient Care Assistant Extern practices Patient and Family Centered Care in concert with The Methodist Hospital values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.        


The Patient Care Assistant will work with all age groups.


1.        Provides care to patients assigned within unit specific defined limits. (EF)

2.        Performs and documents where applicable treatments and procedures in accordance with established policies and procedures. (EF)

3.        Reports observations, conditions and problems of patients to the licensed nurse. (EF)

4.        Records care administered according to established procedures. (EF)

5.        Assists with maintaining equipment and supplies as established on the unit. (EF)

6.        Follows channels of communication for effective problem solving. (EF)

7.        Participates as a team player. (EF).

8.        Demonstrates the components of the I CARE values statement (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence). (EF)

9.        Demonstrates ServicePride standards (smiles and makes eye contact; greets each patient and visitor; seeks out patient and visitor contact; displays appropriate body language at all times; takes 5 minutes each day to go above and beyond for one patient or visitor; honors diversity; thanks every customer). (EF)

10.     Follows all safety rules while on the job.  Reports all accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards.  Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace. (EF)

11.      Performs other duties as assigned. (EF)


Must be at least 18 years of age

High school diploma or its equivalent is required


Enrolled, in partnership with Community In Schools (CIS) program and successful completion of externship of 8 weeks;


No experience required for CIS incumbent;

If not CIS and certified (CNA or MA), then 0-6 months experience


Basic CPR (AHA) within 1 month of hire

For CIS incumbents, will be enrolled in a state-approved Certified Nursing Assistant program upon hire or within 1 month of hire;


Must be able to write and speak effectively in English

Must have basic computer skills.
