Houston Methodist Research Institute was formed in 2004 to rapidly and efficiently translate discoveries made in the laboratory and the clinic into new diagnostics, therapies and treatments.  The research institute was created to provide the infrastructure and support for these endeavors, and to house the technology and resources needed to make innovative breakthroughs in important areas of human disease.  A 540,000 square foot building dedicated to research, the research institute houses over 1,500 staff and trainees, 277 principal investigators and has more than 840 ongoing clinical trials.

Job Summary

Research in the Center for NeuroRegeneration is dedicated to translating innovative neuroscience research discoveries into clinical therapies for restoration of the nervous system after injury and disease. The Krencik lab is specifically focused on understanding the functional relationship of human neurons and astrocytes during cellular engraftment therapy and for drug discovery. We employ novel pluripotent stem cell-based culture techniques, optogenetic methods, electrophysiology, rodent surgery and molecular/biochemical approaches to answer vital questions and accelerate progress in neuroregeneration.


In addition to conducting research, the applicant is expected to apply for external fellowships, present data at national meetings, prepare manuscripts, mentor junior lab members and participate in a robust training program to prepare for a career as an independent PI. The applicant must be hard working, passionate about research and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Duties and Responsibilities are cross-referenced to the hospital’s Pillars of Excellence and will betransferred to the Performance Evaluation.



Assists in maintaining the functionality and operations of the Principal Investigator’s laboratory (5 %). 



Follows all safety rules while on the job.  Reports accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards.  Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace (5 %). 



Independently develops research methods and performs research activities (60 %). 



Documents research results and writes reports of results for presentation and/or publication in professional journals and other publications (30 %).

Ph.D. or M.D. required



Experience requirements will vary depending on the field of research.


Postdoctoral Fellow 1– one year of Postdoc experience

Postdoctoral Fellow 2 – two years of experience

Postdoctoral Fellow 3 – three years of postdoc experience

Postdoctoral Fellow 4 – four years of postdoc experience
