Houston Methodist The Woodlands will be the eighth in the Houston Methodist system, offering The Woodlands community a full-service, acute care hospital with many of the same services as our flagship hospital in the Texas Medical Center. The $380 million campus will feature a new 187-bed, 470,000-square-foot facility. 

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, located at the intersection of TX 242 and I-45, is scheduled to open in July 2017. Construction includes a 150,000-square-foot medical building, which opened March 2016. The Medical Office Building 1 includes a Breast Care Center, Cancer Center & Infusion Center, Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Wellness Services, Outpatient Laboratory and Therapy, in addition to multi-specialty physician practices.

  1. In conjunction with the Director, establishes and manages business relationships with external contractors, such as architectural, engineering and construction management firms.  Recommends and participates in the selection of these individuals/firms.
  2. Consistent with the ICARE values, Service Pride Standards and the expectations of a professional team member performs other duties as requested or assigned.


  1. Works with Director in coordinating and overseeing design review function for HMTW.  Reviews construction and renovation plans, drawings and prints from a architectural, electrical, mechanical and design perspective (or delegates and ensures staff do so) to ensure established standards are met and projects will be operationally viable.  Collaborates with external contractors to resolve problems.


  1. Works with regulatory agencies at the state and local level to gain necessary approvals, resolve issues, and ensure regulatory requirements and building codes are met.  Maintains a contemporary body of knowledge with regard to JCAHO, OSHA, and other essential local, state and national standards and codes; ensures that staff does likewise in their specific areas of accountability.  With staff, serves as a subject matter expert on regulatory and accrediting standards.
  2. Maintains and enforces a safe work environment. Models and adheres to all safety policies, procedures and practices, including the wearing of protective clothing and gear.  Ensure that tools and equipment are used appropriately and safely.


  1. Organizes the Maintenance Mechanics to deliver best-practice services.  Develops and implements a staffing plan (within the confines of an approved budget) and process for the distribution of assignments to staff.  Ensures that work is effectively distributed considering scope and complexity of assignments as well as the specialized expertise and education, work-load, experience, and interests of staff.  Insures department meets work order completion performance targets.
  2. Creates and continually updates a data base (drawings, blue prints, plans, maintenance records, electronic logs, failure and repair history, etc.) detailing HMTW building systems and non-medical capital equipment.  With other FMS leaders, assess the strengths and weaknesses of systems and equipment and their impact on the Hospital’s mission. Provides input to senior leadership regarding infrastructure requirements including predicted cost, cost-benefit analyses, alternative solutions, and risk analyses of choosing alternatives.  Participates with other FMS leaders to collect and analyze data and develop recommendations.
  3. Develops a budget for the department that is sufficient to execute mission while realistic given the Hospital’s financial circumstances.  Approves expenditures and monitors budget compliance.  Reports anticipated and unanticipated variances and provides associated justification or explanation.

3.Coaches staff and provides constructive criticism and feedback regarding the need for growth and improvement as-well-as reinforcement and recognition for strengths and accomplishments. 

4.Conducts FMS staff meetings and provides regular communication; also exhibits a visible and approachable style such that staff feels comfortable in exchanging information and ideas. 

5.Counsels staff and works to resolve employee relations problems.

6.Establishes standards, objectives and expectations consistent with departmental mission and HMTW values and ensures staff understands and complies with these. 

7.Conducts annual performance evaluations and when necessary takes corrective action including discipline and discharge, in consultation with Director and Human Resources.

8. Provides orientation and opportunities for learning and growth.  Provides for staff to attend appropriate training/educational opportunities and ensures that professional literature is available.

9. Maintains and enhances a professional body of knowledge.  Reads, attends appropriate training/educational programs, benchmarks with professional colleagues and otherwise remains abreast of contemporary and best practices.  Seeks to continually improve processes, systems and consequent services.  Initiates and/or implements process improvement methods.

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architectural Engineering or related field and 5 years of hospital management experience preferred.  Applicable 7 -10 years of experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.  Work requires the knowledge of business, general management and Engineering principles.


Minimum of five years related experience, with advanced knowledge of engineering and facilities management.  Knowledge of healthcare operations strongly preferred.


City of Houston 1st Grade Stationary Engineer License, or Licensure as Professional Engineer are preferred.


  • Extremely strong analytical and problem-solving skills to analyze and resolve complex engineering problems as-well-as assess sophisticated and intricate facility systems and equipment
  • Planning, managerial and decision-making skills to solve complex administrative and/or managerial issues, such as finding new approaches to ensure major renovation projects are completed on time.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills, for management meetings and preparation of plans and reports.
  • A high level of interpersonal skills are required to develop relationships with colleagues and clients, gain the cooperation of others, communicate effectively regarding complex information, and negotiate terms and conditions with contractors.  This position involves frequent interaction with the senior members of HMTW leadership team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage people effectively and to lead others through changes in methods and processes.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
