Job Summary

SUMMARY:  The Patient Care Associate II (PCA II) works in partnership with the licensed nurse to support the delivery of care in an environment that promotes caring and healing. The Patient Care Associate II demonstrates basic knowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriately and carry out delegated tasks for age specific populations under the supervision of a licensed nurse. He/she records data established by policy and procedure, and reports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse. The Patient Care Associate II is responsible for assigned non-nursing functions. Has demonstrated competencies or has certification for education of advanced skills such as phlebotomy and stoma care. The PCA II practices Relationship Centered Care in concert with the Methodist Health Care System values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.  

Department Specific Duties and Responsibilities


  • Preparation of all patients referred for treatment

  • Provide wound care services to patients under the direction of the physician and Wound care R.N.

  • Participate in department’s quality improvement plan and assists in collecting data used for QA & Education

  • Document patient care provided accurately & completely according to hospital and department specific Policy & Procedures

  • Provide patient/family education to include:

    • Assessment of learning needs, abilities and readiness to learn

    • Provide instruction as appropriate, e.g. equipment, activities after treatment

    • Provide appropriate educational materials, as available prior to treatment

    • Recognize change in the patient’s condition and intervene appropriately

  • Assist front office as needed:

    • Scheduling patients for HBO therapy or wound care visits

    • Registering patient visits in hospital systems as well as the Wound Management EMR data base

    • Insurance Verification

    • Insurance prior authorization

    • Point of Service collections

  • Clinical documentation into Wound Management EMR system

  • Demonstrate competency in core & unit-specific clinical skills

  • Maintain competencies, continuing education and certificates as required

  • HIPPA Compliance – complies with all of the Privacy and Confidentiality Policy and Procedures

  • Deliver dirty instruments to central sterile processing for appropriate cleaning

  • Deliver lab specimens obtained within the department to laboratory for processing

  • Order, stock and maintain par levels of clinic supplies within center

  • Perform duties as directed by Director, or Clinical Nurse Manager within scope of practice and other unit related duties as assigned


High school diploma or its equivalent is required.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Current American Heart Association BLS certificate

  • Strong oral and written communications skills

  • Critical thinking skills

  • Ability to carry out detailed written or verbal instructions independently

  • Proficient using Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 1-2 years OP wound care clinic experience
  • 1-2 years hyperbaric oxygen therapy experience
  • Certified Hyperbaric Technician certification
  • Spanish as second language


One of the following Certificates required:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
  • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • Patient Care Technician (PCT)
