Job Summary


Duties and Responsibilities are cross-referenced to Houston Methodist’s Pillars of Excellence and will be transferred to the Performance Evaluation. Please include estimated % weighting for each Pillar.


PEOPLE (65%)


1.Conducts comprehensive health assessments (initial, ongoing, discharge) identifies normal/abnormal health characteristics, develops plan of care, initiates appropriate interventions, and evaluates care outcomes on defined patient populations.

2.Actively participates in the interviewing and recruitment of mid-level practitioner candidates.

3.Provides coordination and direction to other physician assistants and nurse practitioners on staff by serving as a mentor; collaborates in the preparation of annual evaluations with supporting physicians and management personnel to ensure all paperwork is in compliance with all HR policies and guidelines

4.Works with Division Chief in overseeing staffing of inpatient midlevel service

5.Oversees and troubleshoots regarding personnel issues and work flow items

6.Works with outpatient team to oversees transplant and VAD work up processes for inpatients

7.Evaluates mid-level work progress and performance



  1. Coordinates appropriate, timely patient care under physician supervision, for a defined patient population(s), focusing on identified expected unit/optimal outcomes individualized to the patient
  2. Round with physicians/surgeons and attends interdisciplinary rounds.

3.Performs delegated functions under physician supervision, such as differential diagnosis, use of prescriptive authority, and treatment according to practice guidelines, protocols, and/or standing orders.  Accepts accountability for outcomes in healthcare.

8.Oversee patient assignment and distribution among the mid-levels and fellows for consults, new admissions, inpatients

9.Makes schedules for Heart Failure Service to ensure coverage for mid-levels and fellows for inpatient services



  1. Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Board of Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners.  Collaborates with healthcare team members to manage/coordinate patient care

2.Promotes quality health care through integration of current research into practice and participation in research activities.

  1. Maintains current licensure and credentials.  Remains current in practice




  1. Demonstrates leadership as clinical resource, interdisciplinary consult, and patient advocate.  May serve as preceptor for Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner students and medical residents

2.Participates in professional activities such as research presentations and publications.

3.Assists physicians in the training and professional development of mid-level providers

The incumbent must have graduated from a NCCPA/NP accredited program and must have current Texas State License.  In addition, incumbent must maintain current license by satisfying annual and re-certification requirements (every 6 years). 



Experience of 10 years in related field. Progressively responsible management experience, preferably in an academic medical setting.  The incumbent will be an active member of professional organizations pertinent to the field. American Heart Association BLS and ACLS required.



Valid State of Texas NP or PA license

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detailed knowledge of the emr “IMPAC” information system with the ability to administer necessary changes within the system to maximize its performance.
  • Detailed knowledge of radiation oncology coding and business practices.
  • Knowledge of clinical and operational improvement processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office software, as well as the ability to learn new software programs.
  • Proven problem solving and analysis skills.
  • Training and mentoring skills.
  • Active member in pertinent professional organizations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.

The incumbent in this position will be required to walk around the facility or stand approximately 50% of the time.  The person also will be required to sit for long periods of time in meetings (individual or group) or at the desk or computer terminals reading documents and visually reviewing written work.  The ability to synthesize information and give and receive clear communication both verbally and in writing is of paramount importance.


Requires the ability to enter and transmit data via keyboard on a computer.  Must be able to communicate clearly by telephone and person-to-person by using speaking or hearing skills.  Must visually monitor reports, messages, etc.


Must be able to travel by foot, car, and/or air within and/or outside TMH, attending meetings and “rounding” as required
