Job Summary

This job description and performance evaluation emphasizes the criteria expected in the performance of a Medical Laboratory Technician. He/she will perform any job-related duties as assigned.


The Medical Laboratory Technician renders minimal age appropriate care to all clients with achievement of the following: evidence in competency skills checklist, in-service attendance and supervisor observation, and knowledge of age appropriate equipment – adult and pediatric.


EF 1. Processes specimens to be evaluated.

EF 2. Performs and interprets analyses offered by the section accurately and

efficiently according to established procedures.

EF 3. Maintains accurate and orderly records of tests performed.

EF 4. Uses independent judgment and discretion to recognize problems,

identify causes and take corrective action. Reports all issues to TS.

Knows limitations and seeks assistance when needed.

EF 5. Generally works well with others making contributions to the work effort

as a whole. Facilitates problem resolution. Communication to promote

both efforts is clear and professional.

EF 6. Performs, evaluates, interprets and documents quality control of

equipment and procedures within established guidelines. Reports all

QC issues to Technical Specialists (TS).

EF 7. Performs and documents routine equipment preventive maintenance and

minor repairs.

EF 8. Assists in evaluation of new procedures and equipment.

EF 9. Demonstrates the components of the I CARE values statement.

EF 10. Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports accidents promptly and

corrects minor safety hazards.

EF 11. Performs other duties as assigned.


Must have an associate degree or equivalent in a related field.


No experience required. Experience in a hospital laboratory setting preferred.


Must meet the eligibility requirements and/or be certified by the Board of Registry (ASCP, NCA or a discipline specific agency).


Knowledge of the functional discipline of the work area.

Knowledge of work area processes and procedures.

Skill in developing and maintaining interpersonal relationships as required in the operating environment.

Skill in verbal and written communication.

Skill in planning and organizing the work area.

Ability to analyze and solve problems.

Must meet the requirements on competency checklist for assigned work area.

Must be able to read, write and speak effectively in English.


Must be able to distinguish colors.

Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.

Works with hazardous and biohazardous materials. Must follow Universal Precautions and be familiar with MSDS sheets of chemicals in work area.
