Job Summary


Senior RX Clinical Analyst focuses on work assignments for implementing and supporting computer application systems.  The role performs as a business analyst to determine business requirements and user needs for developing solutions.


This position requires strong analytical, organizational, communication and creativity skills in providing the necessary support of complex medication software systems.  The individual must be able to work independently in providing training, support, implementation and coordinating improvements to the systems.   Medication errors have an impact on the hospital's ability to provide quality patient care and satisfaction if the software is not effectively utilized for processing medication orders.


The position provides mentoring, clinical specifications assistance, conducts work products review, and formal approval of less senior and non-certified pharmacy personnel in implementation of the application solutions.  Designs or customizes software and leads quality assurance processes for optimizing applications operational that promote efficiency and improvement of  business processes, while working individually, as part of an operational team, and within matrix model project model to support medium to large scale projects.  Supports all users of application systems, timely implementation of and ongoing maintenance of applications, and provides the opportunity for enhanced user productivity.







  1. Serve as liaison between Information Systems, Pharmacy and other hospital departments, as well as vendor representatives during CPOE application research, design, implementation and maintenance processes.  In addition, coordinate implementation of applications between user groups.
  2. Work closely with Information Systems and Pharmacy staff to understand system programming requirements, capabilities and limitations, as well as to implement requested ordering and decision support tools in the CPOE system.
  3. Substantial client interaction.


  1. Substantial vendor and consultant interaction and leadership of less senior team members.


  1. Influences clinicians toward computer use and maximizing enterprise EMR application investment.
  2. Will have budget management input or responsibility for sub-project activities and will provide input for operational planning.
  3. Member of a minimum of one hospital committee focused on clinical practices within the organization.
  4. Facilitates communications with areas that interface with the Pharmacy, Clinical units and Physicians service areas in relation to automated information and appropriate workflow.
  5. Manages the development, implementation, training, evaluation and maintenance of clinical informatics projects.
  6. Begins development of new ways to interact with computer systems in order to ensure meaningful information output.
  7. Participates in the analysis of existing workflows/process flows. 
  8. Assists in the creation of workflow/process flows.
  9. Assists in the development and evaluation of applications, reports, tools, processes, and structures, which assist clinicians with the management of data in taking care of patients or in supporting their clinical practice.
  10. Leads work teams in translating data models to meet customer needs
  11. Configure, debug, program and test computer systems and applications. 
  12. Support and install software applications, including on call support:


  1. Provide appropriate clinical Drug information to operation support teams, project teams, and customer requirements.
  2. Demonstrate effective use of time management and management reporting skills.


  1. Interact and communicate (oral and written) effectively with customers, team members, management and vendors.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Science



Minimum 4 years’ experience with pharmaceutical clinical systems.

Project management skills strongly preferred.



Rx Licensed health care professional.




  1. Advanced experience with electronic clinical systems and ability to apply data processing technology for the clinical and physician services areas.  Areas include, but not exclusive to the following:


  1. Medication Item Configuration in Eclipsys SCM (5.X)
  2. Medication Order Form Configuration
  3. Order Set Configuration
  4. Transmission Policy Configuration
  5. Availability Policy Configuration
  6. Dictionary Configuration
  7. Interface Translations to Mediware WORx (2.X or 3.X)
  8. Multum Data base Rx Drug Mapping and synchronization
  9. Relevant Results analysis and (labs) Configuration
  10. Investigational analysis and Drug Configuration
  11. Exception handling and analysis of HL7 messaging between Eclipsys SCM (5.X to Mediware WORx) or future versions as required.
  12. Pharmacy Department drug protocol knowledge and assessment expertise
  1. Advanced skills across all phases of system definition/implementation.
  2. Expert analytical, logic, problem-solving skills; advanced analysis and design skills, communication and documentation, advanced customer service skills.
  3. Expert knowledge of regulatory requirements (JCAHO, HIPAA, CMS, etc.) and the interrelation of regulations with electronic systems.
  4. Advanced skill in analysis of costs and benefits of the use of computer technology.
  5. Has advanced knowledge of commonly used programming concepts, practices and procedures within the Information Technology field.


  1. Understands completely and is a leader in Change Management practices and procedures and proactively performs impact analysis of pending changes. Includes having in-depth knowledge and experience in following build exports or migrations between Development, Training, Testing, and Production systems.


  1. Testing new build items includes:

a.Upon completion of development confirms quality assurance review for orders or order set Interfaces analysis, design, and configuration and can verify in both Mediware WORKx and Eclipsys SCM acceptance criteria are met

b.Confirms billing (charge items) correct in Mediware when orders cross to Mediware from SCM

c.Will confirm new build items display on the MAR correctly

d.Will verify all clinical administration and special Instructions visible/displaying properly

e.Will verify Allergy alerts working properly

f.Will verify Drug Interaction alerts are working properly  


9.    Demonstrate proficiency in supported computer systems and business processes which include troubleshooting and on-call support:

a.Interface Issues (medications not working bi-directionally)

b.Medications not displaying on Orders page or MAR

c.Investigation and solving PSN report issues.

d.Documentation issues related to MAR

e.Medication Availability usage issues


10.Supports MethOD Build Team and primary lead providing primary consulting for all appropriate clinical Drug information:

a.Concerning drug warnings Interactions

b.Drug Administration Information

c.Drug Usage restrictions per Indication or Protocol

d.Relevant Laboratory results per specific drug

e.Drug Monitoring Information

f.Clinical Contact for Clinical Pharmacy specialists (provide info to them and configure special clinical information as requested

g.Configure Medications to be administered correctly, Right solution, right admin time, correct volume of solution, correct infusion time, correct frequency for administration.


11.  Must demonstrate advanced project management skills, such as creating and managing project plans and cost benefit analysis. 

12.  Must demonstrate ability to lead medium to large scale projects. 

13.  Must demonstrate ability to provide guidance to junior staff. 

14.  Expert verbal and written communication skills.

15.  Must demonstrate ability to lead communication and help other personnel lead communications between business stakeholders, technical resources and third parties for business requirements and technical solutions. 

16.  Strong experience and practical application with multiple programming languages.

17.  Strong client server/browser-based skills.

18.  Strong scripting and/or configuration skills.
