Job Summary

Houston Methodist Hospital System – Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and Surgical ICU Director

Houston Methodist Hospital System in Houston, Texas, is seeking a faculty member to lead our newly formed and recently RRC-approved fellowship in Surgical Critical Care (SCC).  This faculty member will join our growing Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Division.  The Houston Methodist Hospital is the flagship tertiary care academic medical center of the system, with 982 beds, 87 operating rooms and 5 critical care units, including a 28 bed surgical intensive care unit.  The recent hospital rankings by US News and World Report put Methodist Hospital as the No. 1 hospital in Texas and ranked us No. 19 for all hospitals in the US.  The Hospital is also undergoing a significant expansion to create more surgical ward and ICU beds and operating room theaters.

The clinical responsibilities of all division faculty include attending coverage of the surgical and liver critical care unit and emergency general surgery service.  This surgeon will also serve as director of clinical care and quality outcomes for our busy Surgical ICU.  Candidates for the position must be certified by the American Board of Surgery in both general surgery and surgical critical care.  They should have had five (5) or more years at an academic medical center with a background surgical care, teaching and research.  Houston Methodist Hospital sponsors 26 ACGME accredited educational programs including general surgery and abdominal transplantation and is a primary affiliate and teaching site of the Weill Cornell Medical College and the Houston campus of Texas A & M Health Sciences. The successful candidate will be responsible to teach the general surgery and critical care to fellows, residents, and medical students.

Tremendous growth potential exists within the ACS Division with the potential  development of an acute care surgery network in the 7 Houston Methodist System hospitals in the greater Houston area. Research programs in clinical, translational and health services research are ongoing in the division and the department of surgery. The successful candidate will be encouraged to contribute to these research initiatives as programs within the Houston Methodist Research Institute, a state of the art research institute with an annual research portfolio exceeding $125M.
