Job Summary

POSITION SUMMARY
The Clinical Dietitian I position is an entry level to 4 years experienced clinician functioning at the requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).  Clinical Dietitian I participates in departmental and quality improvement projects.

The Clinical Dietitian I works closely with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide inpatient care that is integrated and compatible with the patient focused medical goals and objectives. Primary responsibilities include application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) including the completion of the nutrition assessment, determination of the nutrition diagnosis, developing and implementing nutrition intervention(s) and monitoring and evaluating of the patient¿s progress.
This position exists to ensure:

1) Optimal medical nutrition therapy through:
I. Individualized screening and nutritional assessment
II. Development and implementation of medical nutrition therapy care plans
III. Nutrition education
IV. Monitoring through reassessment of response to nutrition care.
a. Development of transitional feeding plan if indicated
b. Termination of nutrition intervention when clinically appropriate
2) Positive impact on quality and cost outcomes by assuring optimal medical nutrition therapy to minimize potential complications related to alterations of nutrition status.

1.   Nutrition care

  • a. Screening, assessment, reassessment and medical nutrition therapy
  • (ii) Assesses nutritional status of patients identified at nutritional risk by evaluating: (EF)

1. Age, gender, diagnoses, past medical & surgical history, drug-nutrient interactions, food allergies, cultural / religious food preferences, etc.
2. Individualized nutritional needs
3. Anthropometric measurements
4. Biochemical / microbiological indices
5. Diet history
6. Medications
7. Alterations of nutrient digestion, absorption or metabolism
8. Socioeconomic status
2. Medical nutrition therapy

  • a. Develops and implement medical nutrition therapy care plan(EF)

2. Ensures safe, cost-effective & appropriate medical nutrition therapy

  • b. Recommends and / or implements appropriate nutrition care(EF)

3. Nutrition education

  • a. Educates patient, caregiver, interdisciplinary team and / or intradepartmental team on nutrition information(EF)
  • b. Collaborates with patients, caregivers and health care team members
  • c. Assesses effectiveness of nutrition education(EF)

4. Monitoring and reassessment

  • a. Evaluates response to nutrition care for patients identified at nutritional risk(EF)
  • b. Evaluates clinical effectiveness and progress of nutrition care(EF)
  • c. Facilitates communication of medical nutrition therapy care plan to assure continuity of care between patient care units(EF)
  • d. Develops transitional feeding plan if indicated(EF)
  • e. Recommends evaluation by adjunctive services (social services, speech pathology, immediate referral to RN re: pain assessment, etc.) as indicated(EF)
  • f. Terminates nutrition intervention when clinically appropriate(EF)

5. Other duties

GROWTH/INNOVATION (20%)
1. Maintains professional development competencies(EF)

  • a. Completes minimum of 6 AND continuing education hours per year
  • b. Reviews research for application to practice

2. Maintains current AND registration, State of Texas licensure and specialty board certification if applicable(EF)
3. Maintains annual professional portfolio for professional growth(EF)
4. Conducts training & mentorship for: (EF)

  • a. CNA I and II
  • b. Dietetic Interns
  • c. Student Volunteers
  • d. Fellow Dietitians

5. Has a baccalaureate degree in dietetics, food science, nutrition, institutional management of relevant field from an accredited university.
6. Collects outcomes measurement data related to nutrition care (EF)
7. As directed, participates in projects (EF)

  • a. Participates in  continuous quality improvement / process improvement project
  • b. Participates in  activities of committee, task force or work group
  • c. Communicates regular updates to manager

8. Participate in multidisciplinary rounds. IE. Care Coordination Rounds, Medical Rounds, etc. (EF)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Baccalaureate degree in dietetics, food science, nutrition, institutional management or relevant field from an accredited university
Master degree in dietetics, food science, nutrition, institutional management or relevant field is preferred (not required). 
Completion of dietetic internship accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Registered Dietitian eligible with Verification Statement or entry level to 4+ years of clinical nutrition experience.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

Completes at least 6 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic  (AND) continuing education hours per year

Entry Level to 4+ years:
Registered dietitian certified by Commission on Dietetic Registration the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic
Must be able to obtain a current license by Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians within 30 days of employment

Registered Dietitian eligible with Verification Statement:
Must be able to provide a copy of a signed verification statement from an accredited dietetics internship program
Must successfully pass the Registered Dietitian examination certified by Commission on Dietetic Registration the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic within 90 days of employment
Must be able to obtain a provisional dietitian license by Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians within 30 days of employment


SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Knowledge of computer, printer and calculator
Ability to interact and communicate with personnel at all organizational levels
Full competency in computer applications
Microsoft Office applications
Hospital information system applications
Minimum typing skills of 50 WP
Full competency / skills in verbal and written communication
Competency in technical writing and business writing
Follow standards of appearance for Clinical Nutrition Services¿ non-uniformed employee
Must comply with the City of Houston Food Ordinances

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Walk short distances throughout the day
Stand, sit, and type / write for long periods of time
Must be able to continuously walk and stand for long periods of time

Follow dress standards for Clinical Nutrition non-uniformed employees
Work overtime according to patient care and / or departmental needs
Potential exposure to biohazards, e.g. blood borne pathogens, sharps, etc. in direct patient care
Intermittently sitting, writing and entering data in the computer
