This position exists to ensure:
Optimal medical nutrition therapy through
Individualized screening and nutritional assessment
Development and implementation of medical nutrition therapy care plans
Nutrition education
Monitoring through reassessment of response to nutrition care
Development of transitional feeding plan if indicated
Termination of nutrition intervention when clinically appropriate
Positive impact on quality and cost outcomes by assuring optimal medical nutrition therapy to minimize potential complications related to alterations of nutrition status.


1. Nutrition care
A) Screening, assessment, reassessment and medical nutrition therapy
Assesses nutritional status of patients identified at nutritional risk by evaluating:
Age, gender, diagnoses, past medical & surgical history, drug-nutrient interactions, food allergies, cultural / religious food preferences, etc.
Individualized nutritional needs
Anthropometric measurements
Biochemical / microbiological indices
Diet history
Alterations of nutrient digestion, absorption or metabolism
Socioeconomic status
  1. Medical nutrition therapy
1) Develops and implement medical nutrition therapy care plan
a) Ensures safe, cost-effective & appropriate medical nutrition therapy
Recommends and / or implements appropriate nutrition care
  1. Nutrition education
1) Educates patient, caregiver, interdisciplinary team and / or intradepartmental team on nutrition information
a) Collaborates with patients, caregivers and health care team members
2) Assesses effectiveness of nutrition education
D) Monitoring and reassessment
Evaluates response to nutrition care for patients identified at nutritional risk
Evaluates clinical effectiveness and progress of nutrition care
Facilitates communication of medical nutrition therapy care plan to assure continuity of care between patient care units
Develops transitional feeding plan if indicated
Recommends evaluation by adjunctive services (social services, speech pathology, immediate referral to RN re: pain assessment, etc.) as indicated
Terminates nutrition intervention when clinically appropriate

Accountability and competence
Maintains professional development competencies
Completes minimum of 6 ADA continuing education hours per year
Reviews research for application to practice
Maintains current ADA registration, State of Texas licensure and specialty board certification if applicable
Maintains annual professional portfolio for professional growth
Conducts training & mentorship for:
CNA I and II
Dietetic Technicians
Dietetic Interns
Student Volunteers
Fellow Dietitians
Conducts professional development training for:
Other health care professionals
Performs duties as assigned
Demonstrates collaborative teamwork
Practices effective verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrates adherence to policies, procedures, departmental Code of Conduct, local and federal regulatory standards (e.g., Texas Department of Health, Houston Department of Health and Human Services, HIPAA, etc.)

Quality of practice and resource utilization
A) Self-initiates cross-coverage assistance to ensure continuity of care
B) Completes quality monitors
C) Completes activity / productivity & other reports on timely basis
D) Identifies and documents evaluation of outcomes
E) Develops or updates guidelines, policies, procedures & standards of care services based upon outcomes and evidence based medicine / research
F) Collects outcomes measurement data related to nutrition care
G) Demonstrates project leadership / coordination
1) Self-initiates continuous quality improvement / process improvement project
2) Coordinates activities of committee, task force or work group
3) Communicates regular updates to manager

Other duties
Performs other duties as assigned

Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards. Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace.

Demonstrates the components of I CARE values statement


Baccalaureate degree in dietetics, food science, nutrition, institutional management or relevant field from an accredited university
Master degree in dietetics, food science, nutrition, institutional management or relevant field preferred
Completion of dietetic internship accredited by the American Dietetic Association

Registered Dietitian eligible with Verification Statement or entry level to 3+ years of clinical nutrition experience

Completes at least 6 ADA continuing education hours per year

Entry Level to 3+ years:
Registered dietitian certified by Commission on Dietetic Registration the credentialing agency for the American Dietetic Association
Must be able to obtain a current license by Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians within 30 days of employment

Registered Dietitian eligible with Verification Statement:
Must be able to provide a copy of a signed verification statement from an accredited dietetics internship program
Must successfully pass the Registered Dietitian examination certified by Commission on Dietetic Registration the credentialing agency for the American Dietetic Association within 90 days of employment
Must be able to obtain a provisional dietitian license by Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians within 30 days of employment

  • Knowledge of computer, printer and calculator

    • Hospital information system applications
  • Minimum typing skills of 50 WP
  • Full competency / skills in verbal and written communication
  • Competency in technical writing and business writing
  • Follow standards of appearance for Clinical Nutrition Services' non-uniformed employee
  • Must comply with the City of Houston Food Ordinances
