Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY
Completes planned program of post-professional clinical and didactic education provided by HMSL for certified hand therapists that is designed to significantly advance the hand therapy resident¿s preparation as a provider of patient care services in the specialty of hand therapy. The residency program combines opportunities for ongoing clinical supervision and mentoring with a theoretical basis for advanced practice and scientific inquiry. 

The resident performs patient management services including evaluation, treatment, and referral, supervises support personnel, and performs related duties such as participation in rounds, clinics, departmental performance improvement, and clinical education in accordance with state practice act, applicable regulations, and departmental policy, procedures and practices.  Demonstrates competence to adapt to work and customer service to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, safety and other developmental needs of patients served by the department.  

PATIENT AGE GROUP SERVED
Adolescence (12-18 years), Young Adult (19-40 years), Middle Adult (40-65 years), and Mature Adult (65 years and older)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, and interventions in accordance with occupational therapy practice act and in collaboration with referring providers.
2.Documents patient evaluations, treatment notes, re-assessments, discharges, and charges appropriately in the computer system.
3.Performs patient and family education on home exercise, safety, self-care, etc. and distributes appropriate hand-outs.
4.Collaborates and coordinates patient care needs, such as referrals, consults, equipment, clinical appointments, and home care with other departments or agencies during treatment and at discharge.
5.Presents relevant special topics in professional literature at clinic meetings, grand rounds, conferences, and meetings as delegated or requested by the faculty.
6.Assist in the organization and direction of specific activities of the department as delegated by the Attending Occupational Therapist, Residency Supervisor/Coordinator, Staff Occupational Therapist, Rehab Manager or Director. Such activities may include research projects, departmental improvement projects, or other special tasks.
7.Participates in clinical education programs as approved by the Faculty Advisor.
8.Remains current on professional issue sand clinical skills by attendance of appropriate CEUs and involvement with professional organizations.
9.Adheres to all applicable organization, departmental, and personnel policies, procedures, practices, state practice act, and regulations. 
10.Delegates appropriate patients, supervises, and communicates pertinent information to the occupational therapist assistant and PT/OT Technician in accordance with the state practice act and departmental and hospital policies.
11.Delegates appropriate patient care duties to, communicate with, and supervise the performance of support personnel.
12.Complies with the organizations ICARE Values and Service pride standards. EF
13.Follows all safety rules on the job. EF
14.Perform other job duties as assigned. EF


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Graduate of an accredited school of Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Have a minimum of 1 year experience but would consider new grads who have demonstrated exceptional skills and experience in hand therapy.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS:
Current licensure with the Texas Board of Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy Examiners.
Current CPR Certification

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
¿Demonstrates good communication and interpersonal skills.
¿Ability to work as a team member.
¿Has specialized knowledge and skill in areas of hand therapy
¿Demonstrates good computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Work and Excel programs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
¿Includes inpatient units within the hospital setting, outpatient clinic and office areas.
¿The clinical settings might include exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens, blood and bodily fluids, contaminated open wounds, sharp instrumentation, adhesives and electrical equipment.
¿Adherence to universal precautions is required.
¿Patient lifting is required. (see Physical Requirements)
