Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY
At Houston Methodist, the Lead Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) NWD  is responsible for leading and coordinating interdisciplinary activities, focusing on clinical practice, consultation and education, incorporating evidence into practice.  The Lead PA will serve as an advance practice practitioner maintaining and promoting the health of the patient requiring care, practicing medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician. This position uses expert communication skills to serve as patient and family advocate to educate, mentor and coach staff in patient surgery by assuming an advanced leadership role in analyzing systems to anticipate and reduce risk and improve patient safety and quality.  The Lead Surgical PA will take call as required or as outlined by their supervising physician or manager.  In addition, the Lead Surgical PA  examines, diagnoses and decides treatment for patients including analyzing and interpreting x-rays and lab results, writes prescritpions, takes patients¿ histories and orders various forms of therapy.  This position affects direct patient care according to the Board of Physician Assistant Examiniers in the State of Texas and Houston Methodist policies and procedures.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

PEOPLE - 20%
1.Supports and provides coordination and direction to other physician assistants and other staff by proactively offering assistance.  Serves as a preceptor by mentoring other regarding care of defined populations in resource utilization and time management. Demonstrates leadership as a clinical resources, interprofessional consultant and patient advocate. 
2.Collaborates to foster healthy relationships in the work environment.  Acts as a role model and coaches staff in effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication.  May serve as first call for hospital staff. Serves as preceptor for Physician Assistant students and medical residents, as appropriate. 
3.Actively participates in the interviewing process of candidates in department or service line.  Coordinates the orientation schedule of newly hired Surgical Physician Assistants as appropriate.  Collaborates in the preparation of annyal evaluations with supporting physicians and management personnel to ensure all paperwork is in compliance with all HR policies and guidelines.
4.Communicates organizational information and aspects of administrative and clinical practice in a respectful and positive manner when interacting with staff.  Advocates for a balanced workload, promotes positive behaviors, and peer-to-peer accountability.  Facilitates the promotion of teamwork.

SERVICE - 20%
1.Teaches co-workers to develop comprehensive plans of care in collaboration with pateints and families, incorporating individual differences and preventive planning.  Coordinates appropriate, timely patient care between health care providers and other ancillary clinicians, as appropriate, under a physician license, for a defined patient population(s), focusing on identified expected unit/optimal outcomes, individualized to the patient. 
2.Collaborates quality health care with interprofessional team members to manage/coordinate patient care.  Provides first-assist and/or second-assist surgical services as needed.
3.Responds and is available timely to patient questions/issues that arise as triaged by clinical staff and provides assistance for emergencies, as needed.

QUALITY/SAFETY - 30%
1.Provides safe and effective care by leading and initiating areas for improvement in patient care or unit operations, outcome, quality and patient safety improvement activities in alignment with organizational goals.  Integrates, modifies, and contributes to professional practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols by participating in unit projects, shared governance activities or interdisciplinary team activities. 
2.Leads and supports colleagues and staff in conducting evidence-based practive/performance improvement projects and implementing findings.  Facilitates active involvement of others in team meetings, unit activities and process improvement.
3.Performs independent or delegated functions under physician license, such as diagnosis, use of prescriptive authority and treatment according to practice guidelines, protocols, and/or standing orders.
4.Reviews medications and test reports on patients, responds to critical test results, and advises on any corrective action based on the results.

FINANCE - 15%
1.Performs accurate and timely documentation in medical records, including diagnosis and CPT coding.
2.Implements department strategies to achieve financial target and mentors others to do the same through timely documentation of care, decreasing length of stay, optimizing efficiency, and other areas according to department specifications.  Projects awareness and understanding of resource allocation based on patient needs and staff experience, knowledge and skills.

GROWTH/INNOVATION - 15%
1.Demonstrates leadership as clinical resource, interdisciplinary consultant and patient advocate by serving as an instructor in continuing education, formal program, or expert consultation.  Identifies leadership opportunities for professional growth of staff; coaches/mentors individuals to accomplishment of goals.  Identifies, plans, and implements education for the service line in collaboration with team members and Physician Assistance Service leadership.
2.Generates and communicates new ideas to lead team to creative strategies that improve quality or service and impact the department and address organization or department priorities.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
oBachelor¿s degree for Physician Assistant
oGraduate from accredited Physician Assistant program by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
oFive years of experience as a Physician Assistant in multi-specialty practice
oProgressive management experience preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
oPhysician Assistant ¿ Certified (PA-C) credential, licensed and credentialed by the Texas Board of Physician Assistants
oDrug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration withing 6 months of hire
oAmerican Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
oAmerican Heart Association Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
