Job Summary

SUMMARY      Extensive knowledge of the State and Federal privacy laws as well as the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Responsible for requests and payment received in the Health Information Management department for records from nursing stations, other hospital departments, physician offices, personnel, external requestors such as patients and attorneys. Ensure external clients requests are addressed utilizing excellent customer service skills.      

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES      1. Assists clients in their requests for patient information, ensures that proper authorization and legal documents are obtained, and serves as a resource to customers regarding release of information rules, regulations, laws and policy. 2. Determines validity of: authorizations, request, documentation provided from legal  entities i.e. Subpoena, subpoena duces tecum, power of attorney, deposition,  affidavits, documentation from insurance companies, Workers Compensation, and  requests from patients, doctors, and hospitals. 3. Ensures all requests received are entered, processed and closed utilizing the current release of information tracking system. 4. Monitors the ROI queue and complete work assignments. 5. Retrieves patient records from current electronic/paper/etc media, and prepares the needed documents for release of information, i.e., subpoenas, affidavits, etc. 6.  Ensures all requests are completed in a timely manner and verifies correct information has    been copied before releasing information accurately. 7.  Ability to control difficult situations including effective communication, ability to problem-solve    based on established practices, rules and laws and to use independent judgment when    variables occur or incident varies from established practice.  8.  Collects payment, posts payment daily. Reconciles receipts/invoices and prepares monthly    financial reports and statistics. 9.  Performs other job-related duties as assigned. 10.  Demonstrates componets of ICARE values statement. 11.  Demonstrates componets of ServicePRIDE standards. 12.  Follows all safety rules while on the job.      

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS     Associate Degree or four (4) years of commensurate experience required.     

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS      Minimum of 4  years previous experience working in Health Information Management preferred.     


SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED      1. Good communication and public relations skills are essential. 2. Good organizational skills. Ability to prioritize and reprioritize. 3. Ability to type a minimum of 40 wpm. 4. PC knowledge and ability to navigate in a Windows environment. 5. Knowledge of state and federal laws related to the release of medical information. 6. Function as team player.
