The Perioperative Resource Nurse collaborates with the director, managers, ancillary departments, physicians, and vendors to streamline the functioning of the Operating Room.
The Perioperative Resource Nurse is an Operating Room Nurse who is an experienced clinician. Functions in a leadership role and acts as a liaison between ancillary departments, vendors, surgeons and Operating Room staff. Responsibilities include tailored training for specific procedures using specialty equipment, associated instrumentation, evaluation of direct costs, and patient outcomes. Assists managers with the coordination of scheduling cases and assists with the overall growth of the OR program. Provides patient care approximately 20% of the time as an Operating Room Nurse to assist with providing breaks and lunches for staff.
The Perioperative Resource Nurse is an Operating Room Nurse who as a senior clinician functions at the Proficient level according to Benner’s model of clinical practice. The Perioperative Resource Nurse provides direct patient care as needed and is considered an expert in a specialty. The Perioperative Resource Nurse assists in coaching and mentoring department staff in areas of clinical and professional practice.
The Perioperative Resource Nurse assumes leadership responsibilities with high level contributions at the Operating Room unit, service line, and across the institution. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to leading unit and shared governance activities, serving as charge nurse, assessing unit needs related to practice and improvement opportunities, coordinating unit education and serving as a clinical resource for both unit and hospital staff.

PERIOPERATIVE RESOURCE NURSE ROLE: JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and Responsibilities are cross-referenced to the hospital’s Pillars of Excellence and will be transferred to Performance Evaluation.
1. Responsible for training of staff regarding inventory, care and maintenance of supplies and instrumentation. (EF)
2. Participate in the orientation, education and training of Operating Room staff as well as making arrangements for case observation and proctoring of physicians. (EF)
1. Identify cost savings initiatives including input and evaluation of new products in collaboration with Supply Chain. (EF)
2. Assists in establishing a budget and allocation of proper resources. (EF)
1. Demonstrates sound clinical problem solving and critical thinking skills regarding the functionality of surgical instrumentation. (EF)
2. Identify process improvement initiatives regarding surgery (EF)
1. Assists in managing and coordinating the effective scheduling of surgery among the OR suites in collaboration with management and Centralized Scheduling (EF)
1. Assist educator in developing detailed competencies that address all aspects of the scrub and circulating roles during procedures. (EF)
2. Assist in actively marketing the service line programs and encourage multidisciplinary usage function. (EF)
3. Evaluate patient outcomes to ensure appropriate trends. (EF)
OPERATING ROOM NURSE ROLE: JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

3. Advocates for patients and families in preventing/resolving clinical or ethical issues; develops supportive unit practices and guidelines. (EF)
4. Contributes to meeting departmental target for patient satisfaction on unit-based scorecard. (EF)
5. Performs as a role model and mentors other staff/team members in developing therapeutic relationships with patients and families. (EF)
1. Provides care as the staff nurse leader to complex patients and leads the interdisciplinary team in implementing plan of care. (EF)
2. Demonstrates highly developed assessment, clinical, documentation, and analytical skills; integrates and contributes to professional practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols. (EF)
3. Plans for routine events and anticipates/prevents and resolves emergent situations. (EF)
4. Contributes to meeting departmental targets for quality and safety measures on unit-based scorecard. (EF)
5. Ensures that self and other staff members promote effective and efficient communication with patients and families, acts as a mentor and role model to staff members regarding effective communication. (EF)
6. Manages assignment of complex patients and other unit demands.(EF)
7. Reports “near misses” as well as errors promptly and consistently to improve systems and processes and identify trends. Role models situational awareness, using teachable moments to improve safety. (EF)
8. Recommends and leads improvements in patient safety-related processes at unit or service line level. (EF)
9. Audits adherence to unit and hospital initiatives such as National Patient Safety Goals. (EF)
10. Identifies opportunity for practice changes. Researches the change and presents solutions to shared governance and leadership. Leads the change and performance improvement initiative. (EF)
11. Contributes to development of service line and hospital standards and guidelines; implements and monitors service line initiatives that improve designated core measure compliance. (EF)
1. Contributes to oversight of staffing and patient care resources; participates in decisions impacting operational and capital needs.(EF)
2. Contributes to meeting departmental financial target on unit-based scorecard.(EF)
1. Identifies, presents, and leads areas for improvement in patient care or unit operations and works in collaboration with teams to provide solutions by participating in unit projects and shared governance activities. (EF)
2. Supportive of change initiatives. Adapts to unexpected changes. Acts as effective change agent. (EF)
3. Reads and leads critique of evidence-based practice literature in nursing and related disciplines. (EF)
4. Expands own nursing knowledge and serves as instructor in continuing education or formal program and expert consultation; coaches staff to grow in knowledge, abilities, skills, and attitudes. (EF)
5. Maintains level of professional contributions as defined in Clinical Career Path program guide. (EF)

Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with a Bachelor’s degree required
10 CEU’s annually (5 within specialty)
Plastics/ENT/Ophthalmology services experience preferred.
Five years of Operating Room experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
Credentialed by the Texas Board of Nursing with a current license.
CPR certification approved by American Heart Association
Magnet Recognized Certification in applicable clinical specialty
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Must be able to perform skills and competencies as defined in the OR competencies
Basic computer skills
Must be able to write and speak English effectively
