Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician II assists in providing day-to-day comprehensive pharmacy services that require advanced competencies (i.e., order entry, compounding, etc.).  Assists the Pharmacy director in the collation of data for productivity and quality assessment, improvements, and mentoring new employees. He/she will help to plan, monitor, and ensure day-to-day quality and cost-effective pharmacy services in accordance with accepted ethical and professional practices and all legal and regulatory requirements.  The Network Pharmacy Technician II is also responsible for performing related activities in the purchasing process and for assisting in coordinating departmental policies and procedures that are essential for patient safety and for the control, accountability, and intra-hospital distribution of drugs.   This includes monitoring for controlled access to prescription drugs to prevent the diversion of prescription drugs.  He/she is responsible for fulfilling the departments mission to provide high quality, cost effective, innovative pharmaceutical care to the people we serve in a spiritual and safe environment of caring, compassion, teamwork and personal commitment.

  1. Medication Orders:  Has a clear understanding of the medication order process from physician initiation to med distribution to patient care area.

  1. Proficient in performing calculations required for usual dosage determinations.
  2. Knowledgeable and skilled in recognizing medication trade names, generic names, dosage, routes of administration, and frequency.

3.TQC - Prepares compound products with accuracy and appropriate aseptic technique:

  • Proactively ascertains  CII Safe and carrousel inventory levels every shift on a daily basis.
  • Efficiently prepares sterile and non-sterile compounded products in batches or individual doses.
  • Skilled in repackaging of bulk medications into unit dose forms.
  • Assures adherence to sterile procedures and care of equipment to prevent contamination.
  • Applies proper techniques when preparing, mixing, assembling, packaging, and/or labeling.
  • Follows specific labeling requirements necessary to comply with compounding procedures.
  • Obtain required documents and provides or obtains signatures to complete compound projects.
  • Competent and proficient in utilizing available resources to locate recipes and formulas.
  • Knowledgeable of all materials necessary for specific compound preparations and packaging.
  • Appropriately files all worksheets and logs on a daily basis.

4.Vault - Ensures accurate documentation and tracking of movement of controlled substances.

  • Assists administrative specialist in controlled substances to coordinate the workflow in the vault and the delivery activities of the technician I personnel.
  • Follows up on unresolved controlled substances discrepancies
  • Receives controlled substances orders from wholesaler
  • Audits delivery records
  • Audits Pyxis narcotic removals from procedure areas.

5.Follows all hospital and departmental safety rules while on the job.


  1. Monitors drug inventory and pharmacy supply levels appropriately in the work area and automated dispensing units.  Identifies drug and supply needs for re-ordering.  In absence of the pharmacy buyer, completes requisitions properly and generates Purchase Orders when necessary, orders appropriately, via the online ordering system, in addition to following through on back orders.  Monitors the automatic dispensing unit reports.    Recycles IV’s to minimize waste.  Makes recommendation for product changes when availability of product dictates.
  2. Discrepancy Monitoring:  Communicates with receiver, purchaser or staff to resolve discrepancies for quantity, price, purchase order, etc.  Ensures appropriate documentation is in place to allow for resolution and in absence of pharmacy buyer monitors all credits pending.

3.Greater than 50 % of primary job responsibilities include the following for each job title:


Computer Order Entry.  Enters data promptly and accurately with minimal order entry errors:

  • Verifies correct patient name, identification number, and location.
  • Confirms and inputs current height, weight, and allergy.
  • Competent and proficient in translation of physician orders. 
  • Processes order entry efficiently by utilizing order sets, correct bill codes, and appropriate dispense quantities.
  • Manages orders by prioritizing stat orders, now orders, pyxis items, and regular administration orders.
  • Utilizes correct order set code to determine the proper drug name, route, dose, and administration times.
  • Follows guidelines for non-formulary and appropriate clinical notes and flags.
  • Identifies automatic therapeutic interchanges and enters the correct medication.
  • Within reasonable limits (NGT 10% below) average speed and accuracy of the order entry process should be consistent with the group norm.
  • Pro-actively notifies verification Pharmacist of order entry issues that cannot be resolved.
  • Comprehends automated computer system.  Understands how to prioritize the physician orders and manage the automated computer system accordingly.  Identifies and follows up on Physician orders to maximize patient outcomes.

4.Computer Support Billing Entry:

  • Resolves Mediware billing exceptions
  • Identifies appropriate resolution for HIS billing rejects and provides the resolution details to Charge Transaction Control
  • Documents trends of order entry errors that lead to billing rejects and identifies areas for improvement
  • Provides individualized training follow-up to users making consistent errors
  • Provides remedial training on a larger scale when more global issues are identified that lead to common errors
  • Performs ad hoc charging or crediting activities for select areas
  • Must have the ability to work with hospital information systems such as Mediware, HIS, Pyxis Tracker etc.


  1. Participates in on-going process improvement.  Maintains working knowledge of policies and procedures.  Provides recommendations to improve workflow.

Must be a high school graduate or have GED; at least two years of college preferred.


  • Must satisfactorily complete a three month training program which includes classroom and practical experience to learn the technical skills needed to prepare medication accurately and correctly.
  • Must have completed a 40-hour course in IV admixture training provided by an ACPE provider.  Must complete a process validation test during the training period, annually, and whenever the Department’s quality assurance/improvement  program yields an unacceptable result or unacceptable techniques are observed.
  • Must have at least two years of hospital pharmacy technician experience with above average performance and must possess a basic understanding of inventory management principles.

  • Must be certified as a pharmacy technician as required by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy or have an active Pharmacist Intern License by the Texas Board of Pharmacy.
  • Must maintain certification as required by law.
  • Must satisfy horizontal and/or vertical hood certification requirements.


·         Must possess effective oral and written communication skills in English.

·         Must be proficient in the use of personal computers and related software, drug preparation pumps/devices, packaging and labeling machines; automated drug dispensing equipment; prescription balances; portable data processing units; printers; calculators; facsimile machines; and sterilization/filtration equipment.

·         Must understand medication orders, labels, and reference materials

·         Must be able to use standard office and pharmaceutical equipment.


·         Must be familiar with Body Substance Isolation and Blood Borne Pathogen guidelines.

·         Must be familiar with the OSHA guidelines for the safe handling of cytotoxic and hazardous substances.

·         Must satisfy the Hazard Communications Act requirements.

·         Must be able to work in an environment with high levels of potential latex exposure.

·         Rotating evening and weekends may be required.
