Work Week: 12 hour shifts with rotating weekends and holidays off
The 11 bed Observation Unit cares for patients that require additional diagnostic testing or therapeutic interventions beyond their initial treatment, but most likely will be discharged within 24 hours. Thorough patient assessments and appropriate treatments allows for increased accuracy of diagnosis, plan of care and discharge placement. The Observation team works together to provide excellent care, in a patient centered environment, where high quality care is key to great outcomes.
The ideal candidate for the Observation Unit will thrive in a fast paced environment, possess critical thinking skills, multi-tasking abilities, and strong communication skills for physician/patient interaction. Nurses with a previous Observation, Medical/Surgical, Emergency, Endoscopy, Pre-Admit experience strongly preferred.
The RN II is a staff nurse, who as an experienced clinician functions at the Competent stage of Benner’s model of clinical practice. The RN II provides direct patient care effectively and efficiently to a patient team which may include patients with varied and complex needs. The RN II assumes leadership roles with progressive responsibility including but not limited to participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and possibly contributing to service line or hospital wide initiatives.

Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
Bachelor’s degree required for new hires at TMH, preferred at TMH system hospitals
10 CEU’s annually (5 within specialty)
At least 18 months’ experience required. Previous Emergency Room and/or Observation Unit experience strongly preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
Registered nurse with current Texas license
Current BLS Certification Required
(Must be American Heart Association BCLS "Healthcare Provider")
Other certifications as required by unit/service
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Must be able to perform skills and competencies as defined in orientation checklist and annual departmental competency checklist if applicable.
Basic computer skills
Must be able to write and speak effectively in English
Competencies, skills, training as listed in Policy NU-903, "Competence of Nursing Staff" and HR 07 "Competency Assessment"
