JOB SUMMARY
At Houston Methodist, the Senior Music Therapist position is responsible for applying the principles and techniques of music therapy to patient care to treat and rehabilitate people with mental, physical, and emotional concerns. This position performs patient assessment, development of a plan of care, and corresponding treatments across a broad range of diagnoses and acuities or for a specialized service line. In addition to performing the duties of a Music Therapist, the Senior Music Therapist position manages the collection of metrics, analyzes, and reports on data. This position develops best practices, identifies and leads process and quality improvement initiatives. The Senior Music Therapist position coordinates the activities for the service line or assigned clinic, participating in the expansion of services offered, business development, and research. This position serves as a mentor and resource to team members and students utilizing skills and knowledge to help train and develop others and achieve optimum performance levels for responsible service line and/or clinic assigned.

PEOPLE - 25%

  1. Role models effective communication skills, assisting in peer development of such skills. Guides the team to be a dynamic, team-focused work unit that actively helps one another to achieve optimal department results. Collaborates with the interprofessional care team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information and data in a comprehensive manner. Initiates contributions towards improvement of department scores for turnover/retention/employee engagement on unit-based scorecard, i.e., peer to peer accountability. (EF)
  2. Serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to other Music Therapists, helping to advance their professional practice at HM, providing guidance with project development, implementation, evaluation, research, and, where applicable, publication. Precepts clinical rotations, new employees, and clinical interns. Teaches and provides guidance to other therapists and support staff. (EF)
  3. Effectively implements protocols and objectives with team members to result in optimization of staff performance, teamwork, patient safety, and customer service. Develops skills of team members and continually assists with improving skills, performance, and outcomes. (EF)

SERVICE - 25%
  1. Performs highly advanced therapy treatments serving as the clinical expert for complex to high difficulty level patient assessments and treatments for assigned area of practice and/or patient population. (EF)
  2. Provides education to patients, patient's family members and or caregivers. Develops and implements effective patient teaching strategies based on learning needs; uses appropriate resources. Consistently evaluates the patient's comprehension and adapts teaching methods accordingly. (EF)
  3. Establishes and maintains professional relationships, trust and credibility with all on the healthcare team, serving as clinical resource for routine matters with physicians for the service area and/or specialty. Serves as resource to colleagues, physicians, and nursing for best therapy practices and education. (EF)
  4. Acts as a patient advocate in collaborating with the interprofessional team for a holistic, goal-oriented approach to care across the continuum that meets the patient's physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs. Role models behaviors and skills towards improving department scores for patient satisfaction on unit-based scorecard. (EF)

QUALITY/SAFETY - 25%
  1. Assesses patients regularly, monitoring progress towards treatment goals, modifying goals, plan, or program as indicated. Proactively anticipates the complications, limitations associated with certain procedures, and proactively addresses for optimum outcomes. Collaborates and communicates with the interprofessional healthcare team modifications to patient's treatment plan, progress, and discharge planning. (EF)
  2. Develops patient treatment protocols and best practices for patient population or practice area. Proactively identifies opportunities for corrective action, leads process improvement providing recommendations, and contributes to meeting department and hospital targets for quality and safety. (EF)
  3. Contributes to identification of corrective action and improvement activities, impacting quality and safety targets, reporting near misses, and collaborating with the interprofessional team. (EF)

FINANCE - 10%
  1. Uses resources efficiently to maximize utilization of time and equipment, providing guidance to team members accordingly. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks for self and area(s) of responsibility to meet the labor productivity standards. Utilizes time between heavy workloads efficiently and helps other team members. (EF)
  2. Accurately enters charges for services provided, as applicable. Maintains accurate and complete documentation of patient interventions and education performed in a timely manner in the medical record. (EF)
  3. Collects and analyzes metrics to understand the financial impact of creative arts therapy services on the hospital budget. (EF)

GROWTH/INNOVATION - 15%
  1. Identifies innovative solutions, department projects, programs, and shared governance activities for implementation. Actively participates in and/or leads HM related and approved hospital/community teaching opportunities, community services, and/or functions. Expands individual knowledge, completing and updating the individual development plan (IDP) on an on-going basis. (EF)
  2. Assists management with Creative Arts Therapy program development and/or clinical competencies. Develops and presents educational and formal training programs. Disseminates, as appropriate, informational/educational resources designed to improve quality and professional practice. Seeks opportunities to specialize and expand as a Music Therapies leader. (EF)

Qualifications:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Six years of clinical experience providing music therapy

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

  • Board Certified by the Certification Board for Music Therapists
  • American Heart Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Completed advanced training in neurologic music therapy through the Robert F Unkefer Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy for positions in rehabilitation settings
  • Demonstrates expertise and mastery of clinical skills and execution thereof in treatments provided and/or for a particular patient population
  • Ability to work independently
  • Capable of handling challenging/difficult therapy procedures and patient care situations; demonstrates sound judgment
  • Ability to coach and develop strong interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills with all levels of healthcare team
  • Exhibits excellent delivery of customer service to all patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers; demonstrates ability to establish and maintain highly effective professional relationships with physicians
  • Demonstrates excellent time/project management skills and ability to effectively coordinate efforts and outcomes for the assigned area
  • Three community presentations or publications produced annually
  • Completion of certificate of advanced competency in one of the following: Neurologic Music Therapy, NICU Music Therapy, Hospice and Palliative Care Music Therapy, Bonny Method GIM, Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy or comparable advanced competency training program
