Job Summary

SUMMARY      This position exists to ensure patient safety and to provide assistance to the surgeon during procedures. Additionally, the position exists to maintain the efficiency of office procedures as well as maintaining patient records in regard to clinical care and financial matters.       DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES      1. Take history and vital signs on all patients. 2. Obtain patient consent before all procedures. 3. Prepare instrumentation for all surgical procedures. 4. Assist during procedures. 5. Prepare and sterilize all equipment and instruments. 6. Develop and maintain an efficient system for storing surgical instruments and supplies. The system should be logical and simple. All drawers and cabinets should be clearly marked. Back-up personnel should have no difficulty finding these items when needed. 7. Take x-rays as indicated by the doctor, Standard radiation safety protocols should be followed at all times 8. Provide patient education for all patients both pre and post operative. 9. Order and schedule lab work, x-rays and other procedures necessary for the patient. 10. Gather results of diagnostic tests for physician. 11. Schedule Operating Room and Office procedures. 12. Perform office procedures such as taking impressions and wax bites. 13. Keep accurate log of controlled substances utilized in the office. 14. Order and draw all medications for office procedures. 15. Maintain office equipment and supplies including the crash cart. 16. Maintain an efficient archive of physical Dental Models as well as the computer database 17. Assist in maintaining an effective office flow, by tracking physician/patient time 18. Order and maintain inventory of clinical supplies, always trying to get the best possible pricing without compromising quality of patient care. 19. Check invoices for billing accuracy. 20. Answer all patient calls concerning status of their appointment or procedure. 21. Communicate and correspond with referring physicians. 22. Communicate with office staff regarding patient appointments and other information. 23. Assist in the orientation of Oral/Maxillofacial residents 24. Collect co-pays. 25. Prepare new charts 26. Follow all safety rules while on the job. Report accidents promptly and correct minor safety hazards. 27. Demonstrates the componets of the I CARE VALUES STATEMENT (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence). 28. Perform other duties as assigned. 29.       EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS      High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.  Associates degree preferred. Related experience may be substituted for an Associates degree.      EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS      2 or more years of healthcare billing/collection experience required. Experience with workers compensation preferred. Experience in surgical practice preferred.       CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED      Dental assistant certificate, license by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners or OR tech certificate, or Registered Nurse (RN) certificate.       SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED      1. Minimum typing skills of 30 wpm with accuracy. 2. Able to take Panoramic and cephalometric radiographs. 3. Exceptional knowledge of medical office procedures, medical terminology. 4. Working knowledge of PC environment using Windows, word-processing preferred.
