Job Summary

Participates in all aspects of the health and welfare of laboratory animals, including daily monitoring and treatment, maintaining accurate health records, health surveillance, shipping and receiving to and from outside institutions, and providing requested technical services which includes inducing and monitoring anesthesia for multiple species.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

PEOPLE

  1. Establishes working relationships and communicates effectively with the TMHRI animal care staff, veterinarians and research staff.
  2. Educate researchers in the following topics: handling, anesthesia, surgery and aseptic technique.

     

    FINANCE

  1. Participates in the management and maintenance of CMP veterinary drugs and supplies
  • Clean, prepare, pack and sterilize surgical instruments/equipment
  • Accurately document use and transfer of controlled substances
  • Participate in bi-monthly inventory checks to ensure all drugs and supplies are in date and available when needed

     

    QUALITY/SAFETY

  1. Must be able to identify and clearly communicate all health problems to veterinarians in oral or written form, and must understand verbal and written directions of the veterinarians and/or supervisor/manager.
  2. Accurately maintain both written and electronic animal treatment records.

     

    SERVICE

  1. On a rotating basis, must work weekends and holidays as well as during natural disasters to provide continuity of exceptional care to the research animals.  May be required to work nights or alternative hours as needed.
  2. Perform veterinary procedures such as, but not limited to, blood collection, TB test placement and reading, parenteral and oral administration of materials, animal restrain, anesthesia, tissue collection, etc.
  3. Provide pre, peri and post-operative care including, but not limited to: shaving and skin preparation, animal transport, administration of anesthesia and analgesia, intubation, bandaging, or any other treatment as directed by the veterinarian.
  4. Perform surgical procedures using appropriate instruments and aseptic techniques while a veterinarian is present.

     

    GROWTH/INNOVATION

  1. Participates in specific services or programs provided by CMP, e.g. Sentinel program, import/export services, reproductive/rederivation services, colony and genetic management of mouse strains, and technical services.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

AALAS certification within 9 months of hire

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of and technical ability in veterinary medical procedures
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Competency in oral and written communication
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently
  • Ability to work well as a part of a team

     

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Standard Vivarium environment; with typical vivarium environmental hazards and concerns.
