At Houston Methodist, the Perioperative Robotic Coordinator position is an Operating Room (OR) Nurse who is an experienced clinician at the Proficient level according to Benner's model of clinical practice. This position functions in a leadership role and acts as a liaison between administration, surgeons and OR staff. The Perioperative Robotic Coordinator position works in collaboration with the Medical Director of the robotic program to maintain the highest standards in the delivery of quality care and service to robotic patients. The responsibilities for this position include tailored training for specific procedures using the robot, associated instrumentation and training of sterile processing techs, evaluation of direct costs, and patient outcomes. The Perioperative Robotic Coordinator position is directly responsible for the coordination of the scheduling for the robotic program and assists with the overall growth of the robotic program. This position provides direct patient care and is considered an expert in a specialty, assisting in coaching and mentoring department staff in areas of clinical and professional practice. Additional responsibilities for the Perioperative Robotic Coordinator may include but are not limited to leading unit and shared governance activities, serving as charge nurse, assessing unit needs related to practice and improvement opportunities, coordinating unit education and serving as a clinical resource for both unit and hospital staff.

Requirements:

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Responsible for training of staff regarding inventory, care and maintenance of supplies and instrumentation. Identifies additional staff development opportunities for professional growth of colleagues, provides coaching to meet identified goals.
  • Participate in the orientation, education and training of Operating Room staff as well as making arrangements for case observation and proctoring of physicians. Acts as a model and coaches staff in effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication, which includes active listening and teaching. Provides oversight for student/new employee preceptorships.
  • Improves nurse satisfaction by serving as a role model and mentor, facilitating teamwork with RNs, non-licensed and interprofessional staff, as evidenced by the annual RN-RN teamwork score and interprofessional relationship score. Contributes to improvement of department scores for turnover/retention/engagement on unit-based scorecard.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Manages and coordinates the effective scheduling of robotic surgery among the OR suites in collaboration with management and Centralized Scheduling.
  • Develops detailed competencies that address all aspects of the scrub and circulating roles during robotic procedures, including knowledge to troubleshoot and convert to open procedure.
  • Leads the patient and family-centered care standards, as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Mentors others regarding specialty populations. Audits plan of care.
  • Drives department activities to improve department score for patient satisfaction on unit-based scorecard, through peer-to-peer accountability.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Leads process improvement initiatives regarding robotic surgery. Identifies other initiatives to improve quality and safety scores on the unit and hospital scorecards, through peer-to-peer accountability, reporting near misses and identifying solutions by collaborating with the interprofessional team. Role models situational awareness, using teachable moments to improve safety.
  • Evaluates patient outcomes to ensure appropriate trends. Assists with audits as needed. Models the standards related to regulatory requirements and professional practice as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.
  • Models the standards of care related to the nursing process, as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Anticipates/prevents and recognizes/resolves early declines in patient condition and emergent situations. Proactively recognizes, determines a plan of action, and responds to situations, such as emergency codes.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Models independent time management effectively and prioritization of daily tasks, minimizing incidental overtime. Identifies cost savings initiatives including input and evaluation of new products in collaboration with Supply Chain.
  • Actively participates in the stewardship and efficient utilization of resources and needs including unit capital and operational budgets. Assists in establishing a robotic budget and allocation of proper resources.
  • Implements department strategies to achieve financial target on unit-based scorecard and mentors others to do the same through timely documentation of care, decreasing length of stay, optimizing efficiency, and other areas according to department specifications.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in actively marketing the robotic program and encourage multidisciplinary usage function. Investigates and incorporates evidence-based practices which are presented to shared governance and leadership.
  • Leads and identifies opportunities for practice changes and performance improvement. Fosters identification and implementation of innovative solutions to improve patient care or unit operations or other department-specific measures by leading and/or participating in unit projects and shared governance activities.
  • Expands individual nursing knowledge and coaches staff to grow in knowledge, abilities, skills, and attitudes. Completes and updates the My Development Plan (MDP) on an ongoing basis.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing

WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Three years of operating room experience which includes one year of robotic clinical experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED
  • RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure -- Compact Licensure - Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency) AND
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) AND
  • CNOR - Certified Operating Room Nurse (CCI) -- through National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) or the American Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC)

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - PREFERRED
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) -- as defined by unit/service line OR
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) -- as defined by unit/service line OR
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation or Instructor (AHA,AAP) -- as defined by unit/service line

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Demonstrates sound clinical problem-solving and critical thinking skills regarding the functionality of the robot and the use of instrumentation
  • Strong assessment, organizational and problem solving skills as evidenced by capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional healthcare team and patients and their families
  • Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
  • Demonstrates proficient time management skills
  • Demonstrates highly developed assessment skills; contributes to policies, procedure and protocols
