Expertise and an academic track record in Neurogastroenterology/Motility and/or esophageal disorders is desired but not essential, and expertise and a track record in areas that relate to food and health would also be welcome. The successful candidate will lead a dedicated multidisciplinary team (gastroenterologists, APP, dietitian and psychologist) and, if suitably qualified, would be eligible for a fully funded personal Chair. This position provides a unique opportunity to work with the #1 Hospital System in TX and #7 GI and GI Surgery program in the nation (recognized by U.S. News & World Report) providing high-quality patient care while engaging in clinical research and education.

This position offers an exceptional opportunity to further develop these areas of gastroenterology and clinical research within the Josephine Hughes Sterling Program in Neurogastroenterology/Motility and/or Esophageal Disorders and the Fondren Foundation Food and Health Alliance:

  • Full service esophageal and GI motility lab providing the complete range of motility, GE reflux and related testing. This includes participating in a Houston Methodist network-wide cloud-based platform for the evaluation of motility recordings.
  • Dedicated GI dietitian.
  • Dedicated Gastro-psychologist.
  • Close collaborations with cognate fields such as neurology and neurosciences, urogynecology, physical therapy (providing biofeedback and management of pelvic disorders), and imaging (including dynamic MRI).
  • Expert foregut, thoracic, and colorectal surgical services performing leading edge minimally invasive and robotic surgeries.
  • Comprehensive advanced endoscopy team performing procedures such as POEM and G-POEM.
  • Access, within the Underwood Center, to clinical research support including dedicated data analysts and, within the Research Institute, advanced data analytics.
  • Collaboration, through the Digital Health Initiative, with Rice University departments of engineering and computer sciences in research projects in remote monitoring, wearables, imaging analytics, VR and AI-based clinical projects.
  • Access to research support through the Fondren Inflammation Collaborative, a multi-year award to support research (clinical and translational) across the broad spectrum of disorders related to inflammation.
  • Opportunity to develop a program in GI health and wellness in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
  • For a suitably qualified candidate, there is the potential for appointment to an endowed Chair.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert clinical care in the broad area of neurogastroenterology/motility and/or esophageal disorders, including the diagnosis, management, and treatment of gastrointestinal motility and functional disorders/disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) and/or esophageal disease and disorders.
  • Conduct diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic interventions in these disorders
  • Interpret advanced diagnostic tools for motility and esophageal function, including esophageal and anorectal manometry, and workup for conditions like achalasia, gastroparesis, chronic constipation and IBS.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for motility-related and/or esophageal disorders, incorporating pharmacologic therapy, dietary modifications, behavioral interventions, as well as endoscopic and surgical procedures.
  • Provide expert consultation for patients with complex disorders of GI and esophageal function, including, but not limited to, GERD and related disorders, dysphagia, constipation, and gastroparesis by integrating leading edge approaches in patient management.
  • Provide leadership in the evaluation and management of symptoms and disorders based on interactions between food and the GI tract.
  • Provide leadership in a Digestive Health and Wellness Program
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to manage patient care, contributing to innovative treatment plans and ongoing clinical trials.
  • Participate in education and mentorship of medical students, internal medicine residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Engage in, and contribute to, the development of research initiatives in the field.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate patient records.
  • Contribute to the growth and development of the gastroenterology division within Houston Methodist and the Underwood center across Greater Houston.
