At Houston Methodist, the Biotechnology Engineer Machine Learning position is responsible for all aspects of the design, application and refinement of machine learning and statistical tools for the analysis of large multimodal clinical and preclinical datasets using unique expertise in machine learning, statistics, and programming. Working under the shared directorship of the TMHPO Chair (Neurosurgery) and the Neuroprosthetics Scientist (Neurosurgery), this position's activities include the development and application of machine learning and statistical models to multimodal biomedical data, programming, algorithm development, data mining, and contributing to the development and deployment of neural prosthetics.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
  • PhD Degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or physics and field

EXPERIENCE
  • Experience with development of machine learning models and their use in clinical applications.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Skilled in computer programming in Phyton and Matlab
  • Proficiency in handling large data sets, and data visualization
  • Proficiency with machine learning and statistics
  • Database experience (MySQL, PostgreSQL) preferred
  • Ability to prepare academic manuscripts
  • Assists in grant writing
  • Ability to work under pressure and balance multiple competing priorities; highly responsive and solution/action oriented
  • Professional handling of exposure to confidential/sensitive information


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Collaborates with physicians, engineers, and neuroscientists to integrate machine learning solutions into neural prosthetics and interfaces, and continuously iterate and improve upon existing solutions based on clinical feedback and real-world performance.
  • Communicates to collaborating faculty and staff the results, interpretation, and applications of machine learning and statistical models, and other biomathematical tools.
  • Partners closely with clinicians and neuroscientists to ensure algorithms align with scientific and clinical requirements and patient needs.
  • Assists in the training of clinical staff in the use and understanding of developed machine learning solutions. Contributes to supervising and educating students and postdoctoral fellows.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Oversees all aspects of the design and application of machine learning and statistical models tailored to specific clinical needs and for the analysis of multimodal clinical and preclinical experiments to draw meaningful insights.
  • Programs and develops algorithms in Phyton and Matlab to implement machine learning and statistical models and develops workflow and data pipeline, as needed, for specified project.
  • Contributes to the conception, design, development, and refinement of all current and novel neural prostheses for the diagnosis and treatment of human disorders. Presents findings, insights, and progress updates to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Provides on-going technical support to ensure seamless clinical operations of all software and device/prostheses developed.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Implements of all quality control methods necessary for reliable data analysis.
  • Ensures all data are managed following ethical guidelines, clinical standards, and data privacy regulations.
  • Documents methodologies, algorithms, and findings in a manner suitable for publication and internal use.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Collaborates for the cost analysis and sample size determination of clinical and laboratory experimental research.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develops and applies machine learning applications to data analysis, statistical power and sample size determination, inferential hypothesis testing, algorithm development, data mining and knowledge discovery.
  • Collaborates on selection, purchase, and operation of analysis workstations, software, and data storage systems for the development of machine learning analytical capabilities of the center.
  • Stays up-to-date with the latest advancements in bioengineering, machine learning, and neural prosthetics, and proposes and undertakes new research initiatives based on emerging technologies and techniques. Represents Houston Methodist at academic conferences.
