At Houston Methodist, the Patient Access Cashier position is responsible for the overall operations of the cashiering area, which include receiving and documenting payments for services and ensuring a high level of thoroughness, accuracy and timeliness. This position is also accountable for providing an overall welcoming environment and delivering exceptional customer service in a professional and safe manner

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)

EXPERIENCE
  • Two years of cash handling and customer service experience
  • Experience as a bank teller or hospital cashier preferred

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Proficient typing and 10-key by touch skills
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to learn and navigate multiple software programs
  • Excellent customer service and professional communication skills
  • Ability to handle detailed work accurately and rapidly
  • Critical thinking and independent decision making skills
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations with patience and understanding

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and effectively engages with a diverse customer base, including patients/visitors, physician office staff, and representatives from internal departments.
  • Trains employees in cashiering functions.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Accepts and receipts payments from patients or others.
  • Accepts and receipts deposits from various departments. May serve as custodian for patient valuables.
  • Assists in the resolution of problems pertaining to billing and/or cashiering functions.
  • Assists in answering and directing incoming calls to appropriate person or department. Provides general information and directions to employees, patients, and their family members.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Enters and updates patient and operational data into various database systems with a high level of thoroughness, accuracy and timeliness. May assist with data extraction or other financial reporting tasks.
  • Logs deposits and ensures documents are accurate.
  • Utilizes security measures/protocols to ensure integrity of safes.
  • Ensures proper routing and storage of records and other department documents.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ensures cash drawer and safe are in balance at all times and prepares bank deposit daily. Ensures proper distribution of available cash in order to make change. Audits cash drawer as per department procedure.
  • Organizes time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime, and sets priorities. Utilizes time between heavy workloads efficiently and helps other team members.

  • Displays initiative to improve job functions; offers suggestions to streamline process for efficient workflow and other quality or service matters.
