This position works Monday-Friday from 6:30am-3:00pm in the Wound Care Center.

At Houston Methodist, the Sr Hyperbaric Technician position is responsible for administering hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy and screening testing to patients of the Wound Care Program, under the supervision of a hyperbaric physician. In addition to performing the duties and responsibilities of the Hyperbaric Technician, the Sr. Hyperbaric Tech leads and is responsible for all aspects of the facility's safety initiatives, protocol, and measures. This includes acting as the technical trainer for staff, and ensures the safe and effective operation and maintenance of the hyperbaric chamber and related support systems and ancillary components. The Sr Hyperbaric Technician position has elevated responsibilities in clinical leadership, regulatory readiness, quality improvement and emergency preparedness functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
  • Completed a National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT)-approved hyperbaric medicine introductory course
  • Completion of a recognized course in hyperbaric medicine (Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, American College of Hyperbaric Medicine, NBDHMT, etc., or similar nation-specific requirement)
  • Completion of an approved HBO Safety Director Course (Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society)

EXPERIENCE
  • Four years’ experience with hyperbaric chambers

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required
  • CHT - Certification in Hyperbaric Technology (NBDHMT) - National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric Medical Technology_PSV and
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association and
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association

  • Intermediate knowledge of infection control, disinfection, and sanitization techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of logs and computers for the purposes of ensuring compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies
  • Ability to operate, trouble shoot, and train new employees on the department-specific equipment on competency checklist
  • Demonstrates independence and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, patients, and their families
  • Displays strong time management skills
  • Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision including but not limited to organizing workflows and actively participating in problem-solving
  • Demonstrates ability to access information both in the department and within the hospital system to support the department and interprofessional health care team as appropriate
  • Attends Safety Director Classes
  • Completes the required number of CEs


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Serves as the hyperbaric facility's technical trainer for staff. Provides in-service training and education related to the various aspects of hyperbaric physiology, decompression requirements, equipment operations, safety, and treatment protocols.
  • Actively participates and contributes to organizational quality and safety efforts by attending Quality & Safety meetings. Serves on key councils such as the Leader-Approved Safety/Quality Council, Infection Control Committee, Falls Committee, and Physical Environment Committee.
  • Implements contributions to improve department scores for employee engagement.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Coordinates and leads annual emergency drills with clinic staff, including fire evacuation, patient seizure response, unresponsive staff protocols, and other situational safety scenarios to ensure readiness and reinforce emergency procedures.
  • Serves as the safety resource Expert. Assists the Medical Director in reviewing and documenting safety-related events. Facilitates learning opportunities of appropriate events with other interprofessional team members.
  • Serves as a point of contact for patient concerns, escalating issues when appropriate. Provides reports to management of needs, issues to be addressed, and all-important information necessary to ensure department success. Contributes towards improving department scores for patient satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability and role modeling.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Collaborates with physicians to implement and review clinical protocols for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, ensuring safe and effective treatment planning.
  • Proactively identifies and reports near-miss events; works closely with the interprofessional healthcare team to drive continuous improvement in patient safety practices.
  • Contributes to department quality and safety metrics by promoting peer accountability and supporting initiatives aimed at reducing pressure injuries, patient falls, and hospital-acquired infections.
  • Maintains an “inspection-ready” environment at all times, ensuring compliance with standards from accrediting and regulatory bodies.
  • Oversees the tracking of medical product recalls and monitors inventory for expiration to ensure patient and staff safety.

  • Utilizes resources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed.
