At Houston Methodist, the Fleet Technician is responsible for determining needed repairs and/or replacements of system fleet vehicles; ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition. Assists Supervisor in supporting over 50+ system-owned vehicles assigned to various departments across the organization. Maintains compliance with company rules and State Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations to maximize equipment utility and overall customer satisfaction.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
  • Educational training in Automotive field preferred.

EXPERIENCE
  • Two or more years of Transportation/Fleet/Repair experience required, demonstrating the ability to assess, plan and execute timely resolutions for routine and complex vehicle repairs.
  • Experience in supporting a small to medium commercial fleet of vehicles, which range in size of a passenger sedan to a medium-duty cargo truck.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required
  • CDL-C - Class C CDL License (State) - Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation_PSV within 3 years
Preferred
  • CDL-B - Class B CDL License (State)

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
  • Sound understanding of automotive technology and a mechanical aptitude.
  • Skills in the use of power and hand tools, use of diagnostic equipment and the operation of vehicles and equipment for diagnostic purposes.
  • Knowledge of State Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Regulations


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Works directly with the managers of all departments with assigned fleet vehicles to address safe operation, mechanical integrity and driver compliance for operating system-owned assets.
  • Engages vendors/mechanics to complete Preventive Maintenance or unscheduled repairs with consideration toward minimizing downtime or impact to end-users.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Reviews all maintenance logs or communications on identified deficiencies to assigned vehicles and schedules time to assess proper method or means for repair.
  • Contacts all departments to report findings, discusses repairs needed, the time to complete and expedites return of asset to routine use.
  • Provides an efficient response time for executing simple or basic repairs through use of departmental assets and mobile fleet unit as deemed appropriate.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Responsible for scheduling, completing & recording all maintenance work for fleet. Monitors safe utilization of all fleet assets by staff and conducts weekly reviews to report any known deficiencies in operation or upkeep.
  • Ensures all Insurance, State Inspections and Registration renewals are complete and exercises removal and update of required documentation in each vehicle as needed.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Monitors business with key fleet vendors through review of work completed, efficient turnaround and quality of work to minimize overall downtime of vehicle assets and financial impact to the department(s).
  • Ensures all repair and fuel invoices are submitted to Supervisor and accurately reflect service provided prior to expected time for payment or remittance.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains knowledge of best practices for fleet repair including, but not limited to general maintenance, State and Federal motor carrier compliance, manufacturing and after-market equipment trends, as well as technology and software applications.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of Logistics operations to provide a seamless level of support to the organization and it’s ever-changing needs.
