Houston Methodist is proud to announce that all seven of our acute care facilities have been recognized for outstanding achievement as “top performers” by the annual Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Rankings by Vizient in 2023.

This year, our System’s Vizient rankings speak volumes about the work our employee community puts in daily to ensure our patients receive the excellent care Houston Methodist is renowned for. It is an incredible accomplishment.

Houston Methodist’s seven hospitals were recognized this year for expertly delivering high-quality care. Vizient’s measures included safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness, and equity. More importantly, Vizient’s methodology is the most accurate balanced scorecard for hospital performance, focusing on safety and quality metrics instead of mere reputation scores. Here is a breakdown of Houston Methodist’s rankings by Vizient in 2023:

  • Comprehensive Academic Medical Centers — Houston Methodist Hospital ranked No. 12 out of 116 hospitals
  • Complex Care Medical Centers (ranking out of 181 hospitals):
  • Houston Methodist The Woodlands ranked No. 1
  • Houston Methodist Baytown ranked No. 2
  • Houston Methodist Sugar Land ranked No. 3
  • Houston Methodist West ranked No. 4
  • Houston Methodist Willowbrook ranked No. 5

  • Top Performer in the Community Hospital Cohort — Houston Methodist Clear Lake ranked No. 13 out of 333 hospitals.

Houston Methodist’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Marc L. Boom, MD, said it well as he addressed and praised the entire Houston Methodist employee community in his September 2023 President’s Letter: “[At Houston Methodist], we don’t chase awards. We focus on the fundamentals, and awards follow. This recognition is a sign of that. More so, it is a testament to [your] commitment to our patients.” Dr. Boom continued, “I’m especially proud of our success as a system. Each hospital’s achievement is great, but to do that as a system is remarkable. We are working hard to align all our hospitals and consistently be high-performing as a system — and we just did it!”

Houston Methodist would like to congratulate and thank our dynamic teams of healthcare professionals, clinical and non-clinical, for helping our System reach these accomplishments and for providing the best quality care for our patients. As our CEO and President, Dr. Boom, stated in his keynote address at last year’s Vizient conference, “Through hurricanes and tropical storms that brought flooding, a global pandemic unlike one we have seen in our lifetimes and every moment in between, [our employees have] never lost sight of our goal here.”

We know that our employees are the reason Houston Methodist is leading medicine. Houston Methodist cannot overstate our gratitude for their resilience and dedication during such uncertain and unprecedented times. Our System could not have achieved these 2023 Vizient rankings without the hard work, dedication, and unwavering support from our people to our patients and one another.
