Floatpool FAQS

Regional Float Pool RN FAQs

1. How many shifts must I commit to per schedule period?

There are various job options, ranging from 4 to 18 required shifts in a 6-week period.

2. How many locations am I required to work at?

You must choose any 3 Houston Methodist locations to work at.

3. How often am I required to go to one location versus another?

You can work a maximum of 50% of your shifts per schedule period in 1 location.

4. Who do I report issues to? What if I no longer want to go to this location or unit?

Please report issues to the leadership team of the Central Staffing Office (CSO). Location options may be updated based on changes in circumstance. It is not current practice to opt-out of individual unit assignments.

5. When will I get my schedule? In how much advance?

You create your own schedule through self-scheduling up-to 56 days in advance. Your only scheduling considerations need to be weekend, total shift, and holiday requirements as applicable.

6. Do all shifts need to be spread out or can I work all shifts in a week or 2-week timeframe out of the 6 weeks? What about on holiday months?

You can schedule your shifts as you like. However, we do not allow more than 5 shifts in a row. Depending on your job-option, you will have some weekend and holiday shift requirements to consider when making your schedule.

7. How does the self-scheduling work? Is there a minimum amount of time that I need to give if I have to reschedule? What if I need to cancel a shift?

The self-scheduling period opens 56 days before start and locks 3 days before schedule publication. While self-scheduling is open, you can adjust your days as much as you like. Once the schedule publishes, it is set. Cancelling a shift after that is considered a call-off.

8. What is the call-off policy and procedure?

Call-offs will be handled per the current CSO guidelines. You must call-off at minimum 2 hours prior to the start of your shift.

9. How do I know where to go when I get to the hospital? Do I check in with someone? Where do I park? Who is my point of contact?

You will receive your assignment at least 24 hours in advance via email. You will be given a map of the location, and any other pertinent information such as employee parking locations, unit contact information, etc. If needed, the point of contact will be either the CSO or the house supervisor/operations administrator at the assigned location, depending on the situation. Both are available 24/7.
