At Houston Methodist, the Medical Assistant Novice II position is responsible for assisting in the delivery of health care and patient care management for the physician practice under the guidance of a Sr. Medical Assistant or Clinical Coordinator. This position will include actively participating and supporting primary clinical teams. The Medical Assistant Novice II position will work with and receive supervision from the physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and RN's. This position is responsible for assigned non-nursing functions. The Medical Assistant Novice II position practices Patient and Family Centered Care in concert with Houston Methodist values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)

EXPERIENCE
  • Completion of one year in Novice I program or a Medical Assistant Externship program
  • Health care experience preferred

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required
  • Certified Medical Assistant through AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, NHA or Registered Medical Assistant or EMT and
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association
Preferred
  • CPT – Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ACA)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Knowledge of medical practice and care of patients and ability to assist with examinations, diagnostic and treatment procedures, knowledge of medical equipment and instruments
  • Skill in developing and maintaining clinical quality assurance to maintain accurate medical records
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures; ability to use good reasoning and judgment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, co-workers and the public; ability to work with peers in a team situation
  • Provide safe patient centered, compassionate and competent care, ability to obtain vital signs
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department-specific


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides follow-up contact with patient, as appropriate, to ensure compliance with recommendations-medications, lab/x-ray, specialist visits, PCP visits, dieticians, CDE, etc.
  • After visit, reviews summary with patients, when appropriate; develops a workflow to ensure smooth transition of care for patients.
  • Collaborate with the patients, physicians and other care team members assessing the patients’ progress toward individual health care goals.
  • Seeks guidance from interprofessional health care team, when needed, and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes. Follows channels of communication for effective problem solving.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares patients for examination and treatment by escorting them from the waiting area to the exam room.
  • Provides care to patients assigned within department, defined limits. Anticipate the needs of the specific patient population.
  • Obtains and documents vital signs, chief complaints, medication reviews, medical and social history.
  • Educates patients about self-management tasks they can undertake to gain greater control of their health status.
  • Applies expected behaviors and actions which contributes to department score for patient satisfaction.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Complete pre-visit planning workflow prior to visit whenever possible, including completing and/or requesting appropriate documentation.
  • Assists with care coordination with hospital, ER, consulting physicians and/or community resources, when appropriate, to including handling of triage patient calls.
  • Prepares, cleans and maintains exam and treatment rooms. Assists with maintaining, cleaning, and stocking of equipment and supplies as established in assigned department.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist with patient care in the health care continuum to achieve optimum outcomes in a safe and cost-effective manner.
  • Manages time effectively and prioritizes daily tasks, minimizing incidental overtime, seeking assistance as appropriate. Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Identifies own learning needs, consults with healthcare team experts and seeks continuing education opportunities to meet those needs. Participate in professional development activities. Completes and updates My Development plan (MDP) on an on-going basis.
