At Houston Methodist, the Instructional Designer is responsible for translating educational content into engaging/interactive online and on-demand educational experience(s) in the areas of curriculum and educational developing, continuing medical education, simulation-based training, and translation of innovation and technological advances into clinical practice.  

Expertise/skills should include, but are not limited to, the ability to apply Instructional Design models/principles (Backward Design, ADDIE, Dick and Carey Model of Design, etc.), and tools such as Articulate Storyline Suite or Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, SnagIt, Adobe Suites (e.g., InDesign and Photoshop), SharePoint, Microsoft Suite, Storyboarding, Voiceovers. In addition, candidates should have proficiency utilizing a learning management system (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard Learn, 360Learning), and at least one year of experience developing virtual training content with an e-learning authoring tool and/or video management systems (e.g., Panopto, Kaltura, etc.) and metrics to assess the impact/value of the e-learning products.  

Requirements:

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Implements and delivers internally and vendor-developed orientation programs, training programs, and competency development programs to employees throughout the Houston Methodist system in variety of formats including in-person and virtual.
  • Maintains strong interpersonal relationships with stakeholders and customers.


SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Evaluates vendor-based learning content and determines plans for utilization of content, marketing, roll out, and ongoing evaluation of vendor materials.
  • Provides assistance in coordination and execution of various initiatives which support the department and Houston Methodist entities.
  • Researches and develops leadership program materials for individual, group, and organization-wide programs; develops training and program content, along with designing all associated participant materials and activities; adheres to all intellectual property requirements, avoiding plagiarism, and ensures proper citations in all materials.
  • Consults, analyzes, and designs highly engaging and interactive and innovative learning solutions applying adult learning theories to improve performance and productivity utilizing the 70-20-10 framework.
  • Conducts training needs assessment on a departmental, service line, hospital and system basis and recommends content and delivery structure to fill gaps and meet objectives.
  • Develops web-based and hybrid learning and development programs including storyboard, script with text, voice-over, sound, graphics, and closed-captioning utilizing various eLearning software.
  • Consults, educates, and mentors department educators on the development of eLearning content, utilization of eLearning software, and best practices to achieve their goals.


QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Implements learning programs within the Learning Management System (LMS) including testing content, evaluation components, and ensuring that the LMS is appropriately capturing completion information. Troubleshoots issues that arise to ensure access to content and correct documentation of completion within the LMS.


FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Creates and administers multiple development projects and activities simultaneously by creating project plans in partnership with SMEs and customers to ensure deliverables are achieved on time and within budget.
  • Determines the need for materials, equipment, and supplies necessary for program activities. Orders or procures necessary items within budgetary limitations and assists with monitoring training program expenditures.


GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Keeps abreast of competition, competitive issues, industry, technology and innovation in the field of instructional design, leadership, and performance improvement. Generates and communicates new ideas and suggestions.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in training, communication, education, healthcare, industrial-organizational (I/O) psychology, instructional design, or related field
  • Master's degree preferred


WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Five years of experience in an instructional design role with at least three years of experience in eLearning development and deployment
  • Healthcare experience preferred
