The Daily Dose
News From the Houston Methodist Community

Published June 25, 2018

A Houston Methodist nurse wades through high waters to get to work during the worst hurricane in Houston’s history. Another stays late to check on a patient one last time. An entire nursing team contributes to a fund to help a colleague battling thyroid cancer.

These are only a few examples of how Houston Methodist nurses embody the hospital system’s I CARE values: integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence. They demonstrate those values every day in the way they treat patients as well as each other.

“As nurses we realize patients are admitted to the hospital at some of the most vulnerable times of their lives,” says Houston Methodist Sugar Land Chief Nursing Officer Janet Leatherwood.

"Establishing a relationship with a patient can help them heal, recover and live their best life"

“Excellence is evident in the outcomes of our nursing care,” says Leatherwood. “Nurses incorporate best practices and professional standards in patient care and service and monitor the results. Nurses partner with the patient, family and interprofessional team to achieve safety, quality, knowledge, efficiency and satisfaction. New knowledge and innovation is evidence-based and encouraged at every level in our organization.”

Numerous awards and professional recognition also point to Houston Methodist’s commitment to excellence in its seven hospitals and six Centers of Excellence. Houston Methodist Hospital, along with Houston Methodist Willowbrook, San Jacinto and Sugar Land, have received Magnet recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for providing quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovation in professional nursing. The American Board of Nursing Specialties recognizes Houston Methodist’s commitment to specialty nursing certification. Most importantly, the hospitals receive hundreds of DAISY Award nominations each month from patients and families who write about how nurses go above and beyond.

The drive that inspires these nurses to pack an overnight bag before working a few days straight during Hurricane Harvey; to tell the Steelers fan in Room #304 that the game is on; to listen to a patient who doesn’t feel heard—that comes from a true passion for the profession. That’s what you’ll find at Houston Methodist.
